jazzymt
Based on some ideas over at subaruoutback.org, as well as the Nasoic Rhino liner WRX, I was thinking it might be cool to do the same thing on my Outback, but only on the bottom trim, similar to two tone outbacks, but carrying a slightly lower trim line on the front & rear bumper. Boxerace came up with this Photoshop rendition based on our brainstorming: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a294/boxxerace/Aarons-Version-2.jpg Some other members also posted up the idea that Duplicolor makes a temporary paint protectant that could be used to test out the idea on a real car. I became so excited about the idea that I ran out to Wallyworld, bought a few cans, taped off my car & painted the mother up. The wheel wells I did a crappy job on, but this is temporary, just to get an idea how it would look day to day. What do you guys think? http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c161/JazzyMT/duplicolor_day1.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c161/JazzyMT/duplicolor_day2.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c161/JazzyMT/duplicolor_day3.jpg Subaru Plug & Play Aux-in Mod www.jazzyengineering.com

jazzymt
cool! How many cans did it take?It took just over 3 cans to do the whole car. I was really close to finishing with 3, but I had to run back to WallyWorld for the 4th to finish it off. I think you could get away with just one can if you just wanted to use it for it's intended purpose & only spray the front bumper & front edge of the hood like a bra. If I were doing it for a long car trip, I would probably spray the front of the mirrors too - they get hammered on road trips. So far, everyone I've pointed it out to by simply saying "I spray painted my car black" can't figure out what's different. They look at it and ask, "What did you paint?" It just looks stock to them. It's not exactly the stock lines for two tone, and that isn't exactly the response I was hoping for, but it's better than, "Oh god, that looks aweful!" The woman has already given the thumbs up for permanent application, but I'm not there yet. I'd like to try some different lines first...maybe incorporate part of the front edge of the hood since that's what catches most of the rocks besides just the bumper. I like that it has more contrast than the stock mono anyway. It's pretty fun taking rattle can to your car like a madman knowing you can wash it off. I might have to try their "car art" temporary paint and put a racing stripe on the hood for fun. jazzymt
Hmmm... not bad, but it looks weird from the back. Front looks like a Volvo XC 70 I could live with that...as long as it looks like this XC70: http://www.swedespeed.com/gallery/generated//Events/Industry/SEMA/2005/Volvo%20and%20ipd=XC70%20All-Terrain/002__scaled_600.jpg http://www.swedespeed.com/gallery/generated//Events/Industry/SEMA/2005/Volvo%20and%20ipd=XC70%20All-Terrain/008__scaled_600.jpg Subaru Plug & Play Aux-in Mod www.jazzyengineering.com
jazzymt
One last shot before I change it: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c161/JazzyMT/duplicolorXT.jpg I'm really enjoying having a two-tone outback again...even if it's not "exactly" what I want yet. jazzymt
I think that you have to cover the whole front bumper if you are going to do it...That's more or less the same conclusion I've come to...it needs more. But, since Boxxerace has already photoshopped fairly well what that would look like, I think I am going to take it above the grille just to see what it looks like so I don't have to tape it & spray it twice to check it out. As far as what I'll do when and if I get it professionally done? I dunno, I'll probably leave that up to a pro. I'm not considering doing this myself permanently like the crazy Nasioc guy. One last thing - If I really got exactly what I wanted - I'd paint the rest that metalic orange on the Volvo too. I've wanted to do the black/orange combo since I had my last '97 Outback & seeing it on the Volvo only makes me more sure. Not sure if I'll ever do either though - cost being the main reason why. For now, I get to play with $30 of temp paint though, which should tide me over for awhile anyway. FYI - it rained last night and this duplicolor stuff seems to be completely unaffected just as advertised. If you have a warm garage to put it on, I suspect it would work great for winter road trips too. jazzymt
How easily does it come off? does it just peel? any residue left behind? It washes off. You can see a demonstration on duplicolor's website: http://www.duplicolor.com/training/shield_training.html They only say about 1000 times in the video it leaves no residue behind, so it better not. Of course, when they say it that many times, it only makes me suspicious that it does. We'll see - I'll wash it off tomorrow. jazzymt
Well, I washed it all off today. Or rather - some high school students raising money for their soccer team did. They did a terrible job though, so I had to wash the rest off. Anyway - I took it down to the DIY carwash & the rest came off very easily with the hot soapy powerwash. The paint, when dry, very much has the consistency & texture of dirt. I brought it to a oil change right before washing it and the dude leaned up against the side & rubbed a fair amount off. Pretty funny - that'll teach those idiots to leave fingerprints inside the car! Anyway, it's fun stuff & came off w/o any residue...just like a dirty car. ~edit~ Oh yea, and I'm sticking to monotone for now. As much as I like two tone, I have to agree that it doesn't look best on the gold...so I'll have to wait for my metalic orange paint job before I go black on the trim. I'm 49/51 on it though - it looks good enough that I wouldn't talk anyone else out of it - I'm just not ready to do it to my car. jazzymt
you missed your opportunity. you have screamed at the kids for removing your paint. The looks on their faces, as well as the coordinator who was standing right next to me when the first kid wiped off a big splotch of paint was good enough. Plus, there was like 6 or 8 kids that started on it all at the same time, so they pretty much all freaked out at the same time. It was pretty funny. I said more than a couple words to the oil change dudes though cuz they shouldn't have needed to even touch the side of the car where they "scratched" the paint. Their appologetic silence was less than entertaining though so I just took the keys & left for the car wash. They would have run it through their automated wash, but that would have just made it look worse. If you really wanted to **** with the guys at the dealership the next time you bring the car in, I'd paint the whole front end with the red Duplicolor temporary paint. You'd be able to see every place they leaned up on the car, put their greasy hands & every other damn thing they do the paint. Plus they'd get the crap all over them for not being more careful. jazzymt
Anyone have experience on how well this stuff actually protects? I can see how it would be great against bugs, but it seems to me that rocks would cut right through. It's like a very thick coat of dirt. Small rocks it might help glance off, but I suspect you're right and it primarily helps keep road grime off the car like bugs, salt, etc. Still, on a long road trip, I don't think it would hurt. I've certainly had the paint on the front end of my cars beat up pretty good just from bug guts.
