Extended Warranty - Classic Plan

Recommended Posts

Subaru offers a "Classic" plan and a "Gold" plan. If you are going for an extended warranty, go for the Gold plan.

The Classic plan is an "inclusive style" plan -- there is a short list of the things that are covered.

The Gold plan is an "exclusive style" plan -- there is a short list of the things that are not covered. The Gold plan also includes roadside assistance. The difference in prices between the various Gold plans is based on the amount of the deductible.

Compare the coverage of the two types of plan and you will see, the Classic plan does not cover all that much, especially when you already have a 5-year powertrain warranty that comes with the car.

Any extended warranty plan is basically buying you peace of mind because the maximum amount of money you will have to pay out-of-pocket for repairs is known and limited. You are not likely to get your money's worth, otherwise there would be no profit for the company selling the plan. That said, this time around I did get an extended warranty because it was my first Subaru and I got it thrown into the deal at a big discount.

The vehicle's on a lease, so I'm basically looking for coverage from 50K to the 80K miles that the vehicle will have at turn in. The classic plan does cover areas of concern such as the turbo assembly, all wheel drive components, engine ECU. I know the extended warranties are expensive but a few years ago we had the transmission go our our van at 60kmiles, and that warranty covered bill was over $3000 (yah, they overcharge the manufacturer for warranty work) but it would still have been well over the cost of the ext. warranty. That vehicle operated flawlessly until the tranny broke, so making the decision to get the warranty based on the reliability for the first 36K miles didn't mean much. My opinion is purchase the peace of mind that meets your needs so the Gold Plus plan feels like overkill for my circumstances.

Im young but Ive never owned a car with a warranty. I wonder what the feels like.

It feels like you're scared to make any major modifications to your car

You might read your factory warranty coverage COMPLETELY before you buy an extended plan. Some of the things you mention are/may be covered by the factory powertrain and government-mandated emissions warranty.

The dealer here in Calgary, Canada offered an extended warranty for C$2000 (6 years, 120,000 kms). The beauty of this deal is....if you don't make a claim on this warranty, they'll give you C$1800 back.
