GuyGanj
So while parallel parking on my way to an appointment, my front tire touched the sidewalk in an angle, no big deal, i just like to park real close to the sidewalk around here (narrow streets) , but this time somebody broke the sidewalk and the edge was very sharp, as I’m waiting for my summer tires, i was with my Dunlop m3s - soft side walls, in a matter of seconds the tire was sliced and completly flat. I changed to the "doughnut" spare in a couple of mins, that thing is ridiculously small and i need to drive on it for 3 days before i get my new set, that really sucks. the m3 i have are 205/50/17 , so they are a little taller than the oem tires, do you see any potential problem with driving the spare around for a couple of days (obviously extra careful) ? KA81
i think the maximum you should drive with your donut on is 50 miles? or was that 50MPH either way im sure on an AWD vehicle driving with it on for 3 days is not a good idea
D-2.5-GT
its usually both. Not suggested for more than 50 miles and don't go over 50. I would drive it as little as possible on that tiny thing. This is the exact reason i am thinking about a rim / tire for a full size spare.
Legasee
Xenonk recommended swapping the spare to the front wheel (don't remember passenger or driver's side) for some reason...someone wanna chime in? In Taiwan now...
mwiener2
open front diff lsd rear diff i guess the M3's do have a really soft sidewall....I took out both left tires with one pothole a month ago My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
redline76
50MPH/ 50 miles is VERY conservative; manufacturers put this warning on the wheel for liability reasons so you don't leave it on for months at a time. Road&Track did a test with a C5 Corvette several years ago when they put the car through the skidpad and other fun tortures with the doughnut on each corner to see how it affected performance. The results were that performance was not significantly reduced, and that tiny tire can take a hell of alot of abuse as it never failed. I wouldn't worry about driving around on it for 3 days; you'll be fine.
andrew_j
I would be concerned as the spare is sized to match the OEM tire size. You will heat up the differentials driving around but not sure how much.
Billy Dagwood
Before I go out and look in my trunk, how much space is there for a full-size spare in a sedan (stock rim, stock tire)? Will it fit in the cubby? Will the tray thing need to be removed (not like i'm using it for anything anyway .. ) sorry about your tire GuyGanj
mwiener2
A corvette doesn't have a picky AWD system. I wouldn't worry about the donut blowing up, i would worry more about the wear on the AWD system. If you have to drive on it, you have to drive on it. Keep the speeds as low as possible and try to drive it as little as possible. The donut is smaller than the OEM tire size, and even smaller then your new wheels....that's alot of rotation the the AWD system is gonna fight against. Make sure you move that donut to one of the front wheels. A fullsize spare should fit in the well.... Will it lock down, probly not. Does the tray fit back in, hell no. KA81
although the guy said he put 35 psi in the tires and when i got home and checked it was 43 psi when the tires heat up the air pressure goes up when it's cold the pressure usually goes down best time to check your air pressure is when it is at room temp (when you wake up in the morning and you have not driven your car yet) did you replace all four or just one tire to the F1? warnoldscu
that post was about 3 days ago... did you ruin your AWD system driving around on that lil' tire? Or were your m3's stock sized anyway...
GuyGanj
the m3 were a little bigger than stock - i think my awd is fine i didnt go above 45 MPH during the 4 days it was on and that was my scariest time on the highway going fast is easy - slow though is deadly
