Tire size swap info needed

Recommended Posts

I have stock 225/50/18’s on my legacy and was told if I put a 225/55/17(winter tire) that it would burn up the awd system and ABS. Does anyone know if this is true?

NOT TRUE ... as long as all four tires are identical (same brand, model, and size) and the measured circumference of all four tires is within 1/4 inch (or measured tread depth within 1.3/32 inch). It should go without saying not to mix summer and winter tires (i.e. on the same car at the same time); it has to be one or the other.

FWIW, both 225/50R18 and 225/55R17 were OE tire sizes for MY 2015-2019 Legacys, depending on vehicle trim level. The 17 and 18 inch OE wheels and tires are interchangeable, as long as all four match. If in doubt, consult the Owners Manual.

Thanks, I was also told since my car is a limited, that the computer is basically set up for 18’s. I did buy the 17” wheel setup since it’s the optional stock size.

Just got to chime in on this one.

Whoever said that to you just ignore any automobile advice from them in the future.

I started out with the OEM 18's on my 2015 3.6R. By the end of our first NJ winter I had to replace all 4 tires due to pot hole contact. [Glad I bought the extended Tire Warranty] I decided that maybe I should change the rims and tires since I wanted to cut down on some of the chrome. I found some black rims and tires at tirerack.com but in order to find the right combination I used a Tire Size Comparison Calculator at https://tiresize.com/comparison/ which gave me a pictorial representation of the comparison. I found going from a stock 225/50/18 to a 235/55/17 setup the difference is negligible. One other benefit was an increased side wall which made the ride smoother and hitting potholes less of a problem for the tires themselves.

Personally I would have not gone that tall.  But the setup is fine.  I see so many people in my area running snows year round.  Me being me I always ask.  It's mainly folks that have had back surgery etc.. the snows are a lot softer for them.

Now please tell me you bought Blizzacks or ICEXs?  I have found both these snows the best for traction without going full studded.

It's hard living at 8k feet sometimes😀
