soobiedoobie
Hi all, I have a 2002 Legacy Wagon L with EJ25 SOHC with auto transmission Gaskets are leaking. Surprise! Was thinking to put in a quality rebuilt EJ22 engine that has closed-deck design and is less prone to head gasket issues. Am I on the right track here? Would it mate with transmission? Thanks for advice!
Infosecdad
Why not just replace the head gaskets with the MLS gaskets that really don't have the HG problems of the old head gaskets, much simpler solution. Closed deck is only really helpful with lots of power, for an NA engine, it's benefits will never be realized.
silverton
the 251 is an overall better engine than the 222, and it's actually the 25D that earned subaru the "head gaskets will fail" stereotype. the 22 is a good motor and is nice and quiet thanks to the hydraulic lifters. I agree with infosec, you should do head gaskets on your engine, unless you know for certain you have bearing and piston rings issues.
soobiedoobie
Thanks for the feedback. So Subaru MLS gaskets? (not aftermarket?)
silverton
six star is another option for the head gaskets themselves. If you don't go all OEM I would stick to Victor Reinz and Mahle
Infosecdad
Agreed, Subaru MLS or Six Star MLS.
