wmmayer1973 Posted August 29, 2021 Share Posted August 29, 2021 My engine has low compression on number 2 cyl.I am planning on rebuilding my engine.I am considering going Manley rods and pistons.I am going to upgrade to a vf52 turbo and get a aftermarket oil pick up tube and upgrade to the sti oil pan.I am going to add a borla header and aftermarket in Cattes up pipe and downpipe and go magnaflow cat back.I am also going to upgrade the fuel system and go flex fuel.Any recommendations on this build would be appreciated.I would be getting a pro tune done after I’m done also. Is the body and chassis in good shape ? 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Mine, which I am currently going through the new engine process due to what appears to be a spun bearing, is in what I would call very good condition body wise. Paint isn't perfect but it isn't rusty. Do your homework and I hope you have a reliable daily. You will need it. Oh, and a bunch of money. Laugh, as you may. I thought I escaped the saga....nope. 71k on my 2009 and it needs and engine. People that know zero about cars or turbo Subarus ask me if I am ok putting a new engine in this car. Pleides Posted August 30, 2021 Share Posted August 30, 2021 Don't get a forged engine for a VF52. You won't be pushing anywhere near enough power that you'll instantly blow up an EJ257. 400+ WHP yes, possible 320 WHP with an IHI turbo, no. The issues with piston rings failing on the EJ257 are inherent to the engine and forged pistons don't fix the problem, if that's what you're trying to "fix" in getting a forged engine. Blink Posted August 31, 2021 Share Posted August 31, 2021 Very good advice so far, especially on body condition and forged internals. Costs can be subjective, but those 2 are universal truths IMO. One thing you didn't mention is what transmission you have. If stock 5MT, add upgraded clutch to your budget. My stocker held up to the VF52 for 2 years of not-abusive driving before crying uncle.
