Ev0Rlast Posted July 29, 2021 Share Posted July 29, 2021 Hello fellow 5th gen owners, I wanted to get some input on what you all think about the HPS intake for the N/A 5th gen legacy. I personally bought one a couple weeks ago, mainly for the sound, looks, and mild fuel economy/power boost. I know the gains in power are negligible at best but it was worth it for me in other ways, mainly having something to look at when I pop the hood and a fun install. I was wondering if anyone has had this product installed in the long term and if so what have you noticed? I have been told directly from HPS that their intake is perfectly safe to run and should cause no problems or long term damage, however, I have also heard from a local tuning shop and some friends that there is a potential for running lean and causing heat damage over time due to not enough fuel to cool things down. Has anyone experienced any such damage or anything else in the long term as I have only had mine on for a couple of hundred miles and all I notice is a slight boost to fuel economy and a little bonus on the butt dyno. As an additional note, the same tuning shop that told me it could cause damage also has told me it isn't possible to tune my car due to the CVT, though I am unsure about this as I figured it could be tuned to at least inject more fuel to balance out any lean conditions, does anyone have any thoughts on the possibility of tuning a CVT? Once again I know this would not result in meaningful power gains and if I am to tune it that's not really what I'm after, as I mainly just want the intake and exhaust I have to function reliably and for the car to take into account these modifications. I’m not sure about harm but your vehicle is designed to use the stock intake to cancel out harmful (to power) sound waves and increase turbulence in a way that improves efficiency. I would look into tuning your vehicle BEFORE you buy physical modifications. If you can find someone willing and able to tune it, then you can make more power with the intake. I couldn't tell from your post if it's a 2.5 or 3.6, but I'm not as savvy on the 5th gen....i think they only paired the cvt with the 2.5 so it's a different cvt than I have (3.6R) but Ed can tune it. It wasn't my first mod, but what other expensive mods would you recommend to get more out of the intake? It's a N/A CVT, I'm not really sure what else I could do, I'm still very new to the car scene and trying to learn more, and I would love to know what to do next! If so, would you like to buy shares in a racecar? Reading for context isn't my thing. There's a few threads on here about ppl with N/A cars that wanted to upgrade them. Ev0Rlast Posted August 5, 2021 Author Share Posted August 5, 2021 honestly man, coming from someone who loves his legacy, you bought the wrong car! our car is a huge boat and short of engine swapping or fully building the engine/tranny, youre not going to get a lot of power out of it It wasn't my choice as to what car I bought for my first car sadly, it was based on what I could insure and what parents would let me get as I'm an 18-year-old college student, I will be getting another project car soon but I love my legacy and I know it'll never make much power, I do plan to eventually do a GT swap but am nowhere near able to afford that yet, so in the meantime, I'm putting what I can into the car and building it to be more of a pretty daily, I hope to eventually make right about 200bhp and that's about all I would want from it for the time being. You got it. hurt the car nope or my reliability nope need a tune nope if so how to go about getting one XRT tuning but it’s not as cheap as an intake. Definitely look into working with a local leghead to borrow a cable to reduce costs. I’m glad you like your car and I am sure we as a community can continue to be supportive and answer your questions.
