fiber_tek
We purchased a 2005 Subaru Outback Automatic from a neighbor. We noticed it sitting parked for the last year or so. It's in great condition but the owner said it started running terrible, coming over the pass, so they drove it home and parked it. We got it for $400. All I have done is drag it home and pull the covers to check the timing belt. It is in terrible condition but the 3 marks on the camshaft pulleys and crankshaft pulley are all pointing at the 12 o'clock position. Is it possible the oil pump went out? I can still turn the engine, I did it to align the timing marks. Any recommendations on where to start? Put it back together and start it? New timing belt first? Thank you. Carmania24
^ I second that. Timing belt and components will need to be replaced by the sounds of it. Is it misfiring? Does it smell like burnt eggs? Is there smoke coming from the exhaust?
fiber_tek
The battery is dead, will it store the codes? We are going to put a new timing belt on it, drain the oil, check for metal shavings, put it back together, charge the battery and check for codes. fiber_tek
Here's what came out with the oil. Really thin metal pieces. Thinner than a beer can and it can be picked up with a magnet. dgoodhue
Those pieces look a little bit like the material that is used to seal motor oil bottles.
fiber_tek
They do. I found a video on YouTube that talks about chunks of steel foil in the oil pan of a Subaru. It was a rod bearing. The people that sold us the car said it ran but was noisy. So now we know why. Sent from my moto g(7) optimo (XT1952DL) using Tapatalk
