Geoff D.
So now that it's finally warming up here in Michigan I have been using my sunroof regularly.....until this weekend. I've always lubricated it every spring with white lithium grease and everything always moved smoothly without issue. Last summer it began having a very intermittent issue where it would close to the last "stop" before fully shut, and then would not respond to the switch to fully close or open further. This was always easily remedied by simply shutting of the ignition and turning it back on, the car would then respond and the roof would close. I went to open it this weekend and I get no movement, no tilt or sliding. I can hear what sounds like a relay click up in the headliner near the rear of the moonroof, but the motor doesn't move. Fuses are all good so I'm thinking the motor might have died. Anything else I should check before I order a replacement motor? I'd like to have the part on hand before dropping the headliner if I need it.
SubOperator
I wish I could help, my sunroof wasn't operational for years. Some issue caused the front tilting panel to lock right side and something broke there I guess. Techs at the dealer closed it manually and that's how it was since then. Good luck. Definitely a great feature. 2005 LGT Wagon Limited 6 MT RBP Stage 2 - 249K 2007 B9 Tribeca Limited DGM - 272K SOLD - 2005 OB Limited 5 MT Silver - 245K SOLD - 2010 OB 6 MT Silver - 205K
Max Capacity
I would think you'd like to know whats broken before you start buying parts and hoping it gets fixed. http://people.csail.mit.edu/ilh/vacation/ May be the service manual may help. A body shop may have cheaper labor rates and can trouble shoot and repair the sunroof. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). Geoff D.
Thanks for the information. The mechanism itself is fine, I can fully open and close the roof using the manual hex tool with ease, therefore the problem is electrical. As much as I don't want to buy parts hoping it fixes the problem, I don't want to have the car immobile for several days to drop the headliner and then wait for the motor to arrive should I need it. I am going to troubleshoot the switch but I'm still leaning towards the motor after looking everything over. Just seems like an unusual part to fail, never ran across a sunroof motor dying before. Geoff D.
Update. Switch tested just fine. After I reinstalled it I still heard a click but no movement coming from behind the middle of car dome light. Gave the headliner a smack in the area to noise was coming from, and then the sunroof started working! Still need to figure out what's going on as I'm afraid to use it at this point, but opened and closed smoothly several times.
Infosecdad
Might have a slight alignment issue or similar that would cause it to catch and get stuck in the track.
