azm613
I have a 94 legacy L wagon, the shifter has a lot of slop in it. When putting the car into gear it is hard to tell which gear is selected.
doublechaz
Almost certainly shifter bushings. Not the worst job in the world, but not the easiest because of space. I would remove the pitching stop and the trans mount and while supporting the trans, let it tip down some to make more room. Don't lower it much. Once you get under there and start looking at things you'll be able to tell how much you'll need.
