06Obsidian3.0RB
4th gen Legacy with 130k miles and blown HG. Full service history and no knocks etc. Whats better? Pay mechanic to do HG's and risk finding other issues or replace engine? EZ30 replacement engine is expensive round here (Aus), but so is mechanic labour. Whats the usual carnage associated with EZ30 blown HG?

moral hazard
There shouldn't be any issues with a blown headgasket repair as long as your mechanic has a machine shop check/machine the heads. While the engine is out, all of the accessible seals and rubber components should be changed but that should be already part of the quote. If it's manual it would be a great time to check the clutch and associated components as you'd want those replaced while the engine is already out to save on labour lster. How is the rest of the car? If there aren't huge signs of wear and tear then keep the liberty going. As for the engine swap, I don't believe it is necessary. Maybe if you were doing the swap yourself then this would save time over a headgasket job but in the end you won't know how bad the gaskets are in the replacement engine . whitetiger
replace the HGs. along with all the other seals and stuff, you will have an engine that will last another 10 years.
06Obsidian3.0RB
Just spoke to one Subaru mechanic, he said he wont do EZ30 HG's because there is only 3 thou tolerance on the heads and they cant be surfaced. Sounds like bollocks to me.
moral hazard
Your heads might not need much taken off, they could just need checking at the machine shop and cleaning off the old gasket material. I'd ask the machine shop directly.
