LAES
I recently purchased a 2005 Subaru legacy Wagon Limited 2.5L non-Turbo with 153k miles, My mechanic had diagnosed that my rear differential was bad, so I went with the most affordable option (bought one off a junk yard) when we replaced it the problem persisted, se he said that we bought a bad differential we went out and got another one, after installing it again the problem persisted.... (every time I'm turning left or right the vehicle shakes and make knocking noises...) could it potentially be something else ? Plz advise... JF1GG29
If you replaced it three times and it hasn't changed anything, have you considered that it might be a different problem? Just going on what little information you've provided, I would be looking at axles, suspension, sway bar/bushings/mounts, etc.
xt2005bonbon
How do you know the issue is in the rear and not somewhere else? Could be bad center diff too. I had a center diff go bad on me (due to mismatch tire thread depth). And the car was shaking a bit on hard turn. Could also be bad cv axle as JF1GG29 said though. Gex
Bad CV, Bad Ball joints, Bad LCA bushings, Bad center dif. So many choices. After going through 3 difs and not finding the problem I would find a new mechanic.
r.lee89
If it's an automatic the 4EAT did have some issues when turning sharply left or right at slows speeds it may cause binding or chattering. The issue is in the center diff being worn. My 2008 with 113k mines has a slight chatter. A trans service may help but won't completely go away. Another thing is if it's an 4EAT automatic you can install the FWD fuse in the underhood fuse box that will disconnect the power to the rear wheels. LAES
Thanks for the Quick response, All of the axles, sway bar/bushings/mounts have to be replace too, but the sound and the knock feeling is coming from the back like if it was the Rear Differential, due to the replacement of all 3 Differentials I’m starting to think that it might have nothing to do with that part, @r.lee89 yes it is a 4 speed A/T someone did mention that the problem could be coming from the Transmission but I don’t know where to start, I have already spend 500+ in replacing the rear differential between parts + Labor and the issue persist, I currently live in Philadelphia, PA… don’t know if anyone know a good mechanic that knows our Subaru Vehicles
JF1GG29
There are Subaru specialists out there, for sure. I'm not in the area, so hopefully someone else will be able to point you in the right direction. I would be pretty pissed at my mechanic for making me replace a rear diff three times. 08SpecB_DE
Sounds like center diff or cv shafts. If you would like to drive the car down to the Wilmington/Newark area, I can look at it for you. Shoot me a pm with your number and I'll text you the address of the shop i work at.
apexi
It's unlikely the issue, but just out of total curiosity are your tires mismatched badly or something? Is the tread depth between all four tires roughly within 2/32" of each other?

m sprank
Center diff failures are many times diagnosed as rear diff issues by techs unfamiliar with Subarus. It is very easy to remove a rear diff cover and inspect for damage. #1 find a new mechanic.

LAES
All 4 tires where replace about 2000 miles ago... I don't know if previously from me owning the vehicle they never did any kind of tire replacement or rotation .... but right now all 4 tires are the same
JmP6889928
Sounds like rear control arm bushings or possibly a broken RSB mount
