maelstrom3
Hey folks, I've already asked for some thoughts on the OB forum and I'm going crazy and would like some additional thoughts. Long story short: Power steering whine, replaced o-ring, replaced suction hose, connector, and clamps, still have mist of small bubbles in reservoir, some whine, some bad feel in steering. Replaced the pump with junkyard pump, same mist of bubbles. Realize that input shaft on the rack is now leaking. Still don't know where air is coming from, but leaking oil is big priority. Bled system by jacking front, turning lock to lock. Options: Rebuild rack: not something I feel comfortable with Junkyard rack Cheap reman rack (BBB, AC Delco ~$160) Expensive reman rack (Maval,$320) Alternate rack (2015 STI upgrade, alternate models/years) So really I am stuck, and really just crippled by the thought of having to replace the rack multiple times, especially out in the current weather. So I am very concerned about only having to do this once. The folks at the OB forum suggested getting a junkyard rack, but I feel uneasy about option (junkyard grab from a 9 year old car). Is that really the best way to go? Are there perhaps any compatible options from a newer car? 2015 STi upgrade is attractive, but unobtainable below $600. I'd really like to stay below $300. Also, side question: any pieces I need to pick up alongside the replacement? Thanks folks. Sorry to cross forum post but I am really stuck/concerned here. 08SpecB_DE
If you want to do it once, pay the extra and get the Maval rack. It doesn't hurt to replace the outer tie-rods if they aren't fairly new. Make sure you keep the steering wheel locked straight when you disconnect the steering shaft. You'll also want to make sure the rack is clocked straight when you put it in or it could set the airbag and/or abs light.

The Maval was the only reman I could find that didn't have absolutely horrible reviews. I just spotted a newly listed rack from an 09 Legacy at a nearby junkyard. Looks low miles and good condition. I might give that a shot if everything checks out. Plus, I think the legacy rack has better turn ratio. I also looked more into the replacement and it doesn't seem bad at all, not sure why every seems to fuss about it. thanks for the tips on outer tie-rods and centering. 08SpecB_DE
Good luck. Count the turns of the outer tie-rods as they come off too. That will help keep the alignment somewhat in order but you will need to get it aligned when you're all said and done.
maelstrom3
Called the yard, car just came in. Wasn't a collision, motor went, rack is still on the car, and only 68k miles. Gonna go ahead with that one, looks like it's as good as I'll get! I'm gonna get the lifetime alignment from Firestone. Only $190, and I'm gonna have to do some suspension work eventually so it will be nice to have it paid for once.
Outblack
Hey guys anyone have any experience with the Subaru repair kit for the steering rack? I just ordered it from the dealer it’s part #34191AG06A I was doing an oil change today and saw the leak by the boot, no groaning or issues with the pump or rack yet besides the leak. Looked up the diagram on Subaru parts website it looks like a few seals and a gasket. Cost 33 dollars I ordered it already going to tear into it next weekend.
