Hey folks,
I've already asked for some thoughts on the OB forum and I'm going crazy and would like some additional thoughts.
Long story short: Power steering whine, replaced o-ring, replaced suction hose, connector, and clamps, still have mist of small bubbles in reservoir, some whine, some bad feel in steering. Replaced the pump with junkyard pump, same mist of bubbles. Realize that input shaft on the rack is now leaking. Still don't know where air is coming from, but leaking oil is big priority. Bled system by jacking front, turning lock to lock.
Options:
Rebuild rack: not something I feel comfortable with
Junkyard rack
Cheap reman rack (BBB, AC Delco ~$160)
Expensive reman rack (Maval,$320)
Alternate rack (2015 STI upgrade, alternate models/years)
So really I am stuck, and really just crippled by the thought of having to replace the rack multiple times, especially out in the current weather. So I am very concerned about only having to do this once.
The folks at the OB forum suggested getting a junkyard rack, but I feel uneasy about option (junkyard grab from a 9 year old car). Is that really the best way to go? Are there perhaps any compatible options from a newer car? 2015 STi upgrade is attractive, but unobtainable below $600. I'd really like to stay below $300.
Also, side question: any pieces I need to pick up alongside the replacement?
Thanks folks. Sorry to cross forum post but I am really stuck/concerned here.
