Footie
Question: Can I use the crossbars off of a forester on my legacy wagon? Answer: Yes, with minor modification. I met a friendly neighborhood redneck who had a shot 2001 forester sitting in his yard waiting to go to its grave, and he gave me the crossbars off of it to try to fit onto my 05 legacy gt wagon. One bar fit my legacy all the way up front, but because the rails get closer together in the rear, I had to cut one of the bars down. This is easy to do with a hacksaw. All you have to do is remove the bolts that hold the crossbar mounting foot to the bar. Do this on the side that has two bolts, not just one. The side with just one bolt is for adjusting the bar to different positions on the roof. Attach that side to one of the rails, and hold the detatched foot on the rail next to the crossbar to mark where it needs to be cut. Hack it off with a hacksaw or sawsall with a metal cutting blade, drill two new holes on the crossbar where they need to go, bolt it back on, and install your fancy custom crossbars. Because the 01 forester has different style siderails, mine has some gaps between the mounting feet and the siderails, but it still bolts down just fine and is completely solid. Hope this helps.
