Cleaning Up My '05 LGT

This thread is just a history of my work on my 2005 LGT. It's got a few problems and before I put it back on the road I want to gut it and clean it. Please forgive me if I use the wrong terms - still learning.

 

So the problems started a couple of weeks ago when I received the dreaded P0011 code. Found out about Banjo Bolts and how much they suck. Checked 2/4(5?) of the bolts and found no filter. So what's left is the one between the engine and the turbo and the one behind the belts.

 

Known Problems:

-When it's cold I can smell gas - small gas leak somewhere.

-Remaining Banjo Bolt inspection.

-Test OVCs

-Coolant in the PVC system.

-Coolant Reservoir empties regularly - ^possible reason.

-Clutch squeaks like a door needing some WD40 when depressed.

-Engine Bay is dirty. I want it clean.

 

But first!... Removal/Inspection of the Intercooler and surrounding area.

Well it definitely has some damaged fins. I will see if I can straighten them.

 

I did run come across a few concerns.

#1 Oil in the intake(?)/turbo/passenger side of the Intercooler. Smells of oil. This doesn't seem to be normal. What do you say?

#2 Oil in the outflow(?)/driver side of the Intercooler. Smells of gas. From what I understand, this is a direct link into the Intake Manifold (would that make this the "intake" side.. :spin:).

#4 I believe this line is connected to the Clutch Reservoir. Anybody know if that's a Banjo Bolt under there?

#5 What looks to be some major corrosion off the turbo (towards the firewall). Thoughts to whether this is normal?

#6 Lots of gunk residue on the hose going into the turbo. Normal?

#7 And last... what the heck is this to the left of the alternator and why is it not uniform in shape AND crunchy. My gut feeling is replace it/clean it/shave it to a weird hedge design.

Other Questions for the Community:

 

This project of mine is going to take time and with time comes weather. I am concerned with the Intercooler off, rain will get into the hood air inlet and make some contact with electrical systems. Any thoughts on how to plug this inlet for the remainder of the project? No garage, btw.

Here is my work on the Intercooler. It isn't perfect but at least I managed to restore the Intercooler fins vertical and remove all blockages of air flow.

 

Tools Used:

18 pack lockpick set

Needle-nose pliers

 

Tried wrapping the previous pictures in "spoiler" bbcode but it wasn't working.

The gas smell is a common problem with Subaru's especially in areas where there is cold weather, I have had the problem on my 04 WRX and my 05 LGT. You just have to go through and tighten all the clamps on the rubber hoses that attach to the fuel rail. They can be a bit of a PITA since the screws on the clamps always seem to be pointing down and make it a b***h to get at them. But once you snug them down the smell should go away.

 

My next advice would be to get an AOS (Air to Oil separator) or catch can, that will help with the crap you have in you crankcase breathers. I'd also suggest replacing the breather gaskets because they tend to deteriorate and become misshapen which keeps them from venting the crankcase (valve cover) properly.

 

All the oil reside and gas smell could be, and probably is, linked to the need to have the crankcase breathers cleared out and new gaskets installed. You have oil vapor that floats around and under boost your crankcase breathers will vent that into you intake, hence why you have and oily residue at your turbo outlet and inside you TMIC... I don't see anything to get worried about, just some general maintenance. Your turbo inlet probably has some of that oil residue in it too which is why you're seeing it weep through where the inlet attaches to the turbo compressor, so I'd look into maybe doing a silicone inlet since you're in there anyways ;)

 

The dented fins on your TMIC looks like somebody fumbled it when either last installing/removing it and it landed on the pitch mount, nothing that can't be fixed with a small flat head or tweezers.

 

The banjo bolt for the clutch slave looks fine, so nothing to worry about there. The bearing housing on your turbo, ehh, I think once you power wash it you 'll be able to tell if there is anything going on. Oh, and that diaphragm with the foam around it, it's some emissions piece that does whatever. Long story short, they all look like that with age and you only need to worry if it's cracked and/or leaking.
