2tall4all
I have a 2007 Legacy GT with an automatic. But I found a 2006 Legacy Spec B. Can the rear differentials be swapped out? Would there be any gain from doing so?
hadvw
I think they have different rear ends (R160 vs R180), so I don't think it will fit..
Th3Franz
06 spec b had the 5 speed and pretty sure it's the same r160 as the GT. 07+ different story -Franz The end of a Legacy http://www.youtube.com/th3franz

SBT
The 5EAT and the 5MT/6MT transmissions have different rear differentials, both in type and final ratio. Some exceptions though few. You cannot mix these two (auto trans/man diff) unless you ensure the ratios match. Otherwise you would have a driven mismatch between the front axle and the rear. Something would break...quickly. I'm looking for my PDF that shows the differences. Will link it if I find it. - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
whitetiger
^not exatly. 05-06 5mt including the 06 spec b cars used a VLSD with 4.11 ratio R160 05-06 5eat cars used the same VLSD but with 3.92 R160 07-09 5mt and 5eat cars used a VLSD r160 w/ 3.92 gears 07-09 6mt spec B used a R180 with a torsen and 3.92 gears. so for the OP, the 06 spec b and 07 gt both use a rear VLSD in R160 flavor, but the gearing is different. the only upgrade would be to find a 07-09 spec b R180 and rear axles. aside from that, you can have your rear end built with an aftermarket quaife or clutch type unit and retain your 3.92 gearing. Which is why I was looking for the PDF I created. It spells everything out.
