d22597
Recently had a shop install a new clutch in my 09 specb and noticed some rattling at the bell housing. Further inspection I found the housing cover is only attached on the drivers side and chewed up on the pass side. Looks like it made contact with the flywheel at some point and now just rattling loose. Any thoughts on what caused this and best course of action? I keep finding more things the shop screwed up and nervous what else they messed up.
Max Capacity
I would not start the engine again until that is fixed. Flat bed the car to the shop and have them fix what they screwed up. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). d22597
No way I'm letting them touch my car again. I just installed all new suspension components, turbo, tmic, fueling, etc. Is it possible to replace the cover without removing the trans? Here is a partial list of what I found from the review I wrote. Since, I also found the pitch arm loose and other missing bolts.
xt2005bonbon
Is it possible to replace the cover without removing the trans? Are you referring to the pressure plate? If yes, then you have to drop the trans in order to access it.
d22597
The part is a small cover that bolts on the bottom of the engine. The part is called "clutch housing cover". This is the best illustration I could find.
Max Capacity
Remove that cover. Mine has been in the shed for about 6 years now. Some day I might put it back on...yea, right. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. d22597
Got the cover off. It wasn't easy and had to use tin snips to take it out in pieces. Also looks like a chunk of the block was damaged. I'm wondering if the shop dropped a bolt or something in the clutch housing, got caught in the flywheel, then ejected through the cover? The cover bolt was still in the right side with a small section of the cover still bolted to the block. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell the damage to the cover by me getting it out vs what happened on its own.
d22597
Mystery solved. After I posted above, I remembered I had USB endoscope camera and did some more exploring. Looks pretty obvious the shop pinched a corner of the cover between the trans and motor. There is still a small piece left sandwiched. I'm guessing I will need to loosen the trans from the block to get the last of the cover.

Max Capacity
And the shop didn't notice any noise when they started the car... 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
