legacylee
Nice website. My son has been reading your site for a few month's, as he bought an 05 gt limited (turbo) He absolutely loves the car. Now the problem: He was driving Saturday night and developed a rod knock. He financed the car but, it was purchased privately so he's screwed on any kind of warranty. The car is at a local garage and I already know the motor will have to be replaced. The Question: Could he replace the engine with a jdm turbo from Ebay( for now), as its his daily driver. If i,m reading correctly its almost plug and play except , sensors and intake. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
whitetiger
better to just have a shop who is familiar with these cars replace the shortblock with a new one. assuming there is no metal in the oil system, a new shortblock and a healthy turbo will make the car last another 100k miles. do it right, make it last a long time
Max Capacity
Yep. lots of us just get a ej257 short block from Subaru, check the Vendor site for pricing, https://parts.subaruonlineparts.com/subaru/impreza/10103ac030/2007-year/wrx-sti-trim/2-5l-h4-gas-engine/engine-cat/engine-scat/?part_name=short-block http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/oem-online-subaru-parts-vendors-list-42243.html You need the gasket set for your year car. See my click here link for what I did. That's a ej257 I installed. https://parts.bestbuysubaru.com/productSearch.aspx?searchTerm=10103AC030 I suggest you call them and order the ej257 and gasket set from them. This is the first time I've done this. I walked up stairs and found the receipt for my ej257, it was a 10103AC050 short block $1775.00 and 101005AA720 gasket set $214.07. That was on Apr 13 2012 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. legacylee
Thanks for the replies. We are going the new short block route but, also wondering if the stock turbo is any kind of problem. The story we got on the car. It was purchased from down south with a bad turbo (starved of oil). The turbo was replaced and timing belt done as well. This supposedly occurred approx 30k miles ago. So it seems obvious what happened, repairs were made but, metal particle were still in engine causing the recent failure. Are the stock turbos reliable? should we go aftermarket of just get a larger stock style( why not upgrade that if we can)? We are also looking to replace the avcs pulleys, oil cooler, and (possibly) the oil pan. Also cleaning the avcs solenoids and lines along with everything else normally done during a rebuild. If there is any thing I'm missing please let me know. thank's Lee
whitetiger
turbo are not reliable. any metal in the oil system from the bad rod bearing in the engine will have compromised the turbo's journal bearings. send it out to a reputable re-builder for new upgraded bearings, assuming the wheels are still in good condition.
