ibhknl
Just looking for some opinions on my block prep for the new gaskets. I used a 3m Roloc Bristle Disc to clean the mating surface, along with a little work with a green scotchbrite pad to get surface areas not reachable with the disc. I used the roloc, scotchbrite, and small flathead screwdriver on the pistons. Heads are coming home from the shop tomorrow. How does the gasket surface look? Good to go? Still a little gasket color in a few places but its smooth as can be to the touch. https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/629878O/3m-roloc-bristle-discs.pdf
RustyRuu
what is your deck surface warpage at? how flat was it?
ibhknl
I used a straight edge and feeler gauge. Warpage, if any, is so minimal it was hard to quantify.
RustyRuu
It should be good to go or it looks and sounds like you have it covered. Be sure to move those prisons to mid stroke before putting your heads and then adjust and check your valves before putting the valve cover on. Have you gotten a new timing kit yet, gates kits are not what they used to be just do a search here. I'm on my phone at work and can't paste the link. Just something to look into. RustyRuu
Head studs sound like a royal pain with the short block still in the vehicle. Do you think it's still possible? I mean everything is possible but, what do others think? And it's only a SOHC block would studs be overkill?

ibhknl
Motor is still in the car, but I cant get the drivers side head back on. Anyone have tips or a good thread/video on this? Can it be done?
RustyRuu
You can undo the bottom nut for the mount on that side and try and Jack it up maybe put a 2 by 4 under it to hold it in place without the jack. It might give you a bit more clearance..
ibhknl
That worked! Got the heads on. I have not began torquing yet but my passenger side gasket looks a bit funny, is it ok? Drivers side is all "together".
