Possible Turbo Failure?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! First post in a while. But I'm wanting to get your opinion on what I'm dealing with mechanically lately. I've run it by my local Subaru specialist but wanted to get your thoughts as well.

So a couple weeks ago I got an check engine light with a simultaneous flashing cruise light. I've only driven it a handful of times since that began. Today, however, things changed. I started getting a rattle noise with any acceleration attempt along with lack of power and a stutter with any acceleration. I've also been getting a hint of what could only be my clutch burning. A possible separate issue all together. My local Subaru specialist suggests a possible turbo failure. And I believe that could potentially be a very expensive fix.

Like I said, just wanting to see what any guys may have had experience with yourselves. Let me know!

1. What's the code?

2. If you suspect a turbo failure STOP DRIVING. if it is failing you driving around on it will change it from a 1.5k to a 7k fix.

3. I think your local Subaru place needs to be questioned if they didn't tell you any of this...

Pull the downpipe look at your turbo. Is there shafts play, oil, etc? If yes, you need to do an oil analysis and see what's in there.

Yep, metallic pop corn popping sound and lack of acceleration and me not getting a tow because the car is "drivable still" is how I ended up with a build thread like everyone else.

Pull the dipstick and wipe it on a napkin. Not the most scientific way to tell but glitter is not a pretty site.

Profile as 05, you still have banjo filters in?

They only tell you "Car was running fine to us but we didn't drive it far. If you suspect something is wrong we charge $1200 to tear it all down and see if it is something wrong."

I NEVER CHECKED MY SHAFT PLAY AND I'M TERRIFIED. The car runs great but I think the turbo might have 132,000 miles on it and "checking the shaft play" was never on my radar. It just occurred to me a few days ago that I can do it myself easily. I'll pop the DP off this evening and see what I can see.

Shame on me...

Best wishes to original post.

EDIT: I have a rebuilt VF52 ready to go in but I've never changed a turbo before and who knows what will go wrong the first time around. Plus I think I need a gasket or something LOL.

Don't feel too bad. I bought my car around 43k miles, I have 95k miles now and recently checked for shaft play before my Stg 2 tune. Luckily it's solid.

My mom has 150k on her WRX (stock tune!). I mentioned they need to have the mechanic (solid guy who builds and races cars) check the turbo, which they said he did and no issues.

OMG I thought I lost my mind. I opened this thread, glanced at the avatar and died a bit inside trying to rationalize and figure out what the hell I posted. It's okay... now I know it wasn't me.

LOL I thought of you when I saw this post.

Well I went outside and pulled the downpipe off my car in the cold. It was windy and 29 degrees but there were only a few waves of snowflakes.

No turbo shaft play at all! I'm elated. It's such a relief. I've been gingerly driving around in "I" and gritting my teeth. :)

If the turbo shaft is good with no play, it may be a vacuum hose that's popped off. My fuel regulator vacuum hose use to do this, causing it to go into "limp" mode several times.

- Check the codes first

- Check turbo shaft play

- check disconnected vacuum hoses

My wife's balls are delicious.
