Navigation Screen & Polarized Sunglasses

Recommended Posts

I've worn the same prescription polarized sunglasses in multiple cars with navigation/audio screens without issue viewing the screen. This is not the case with my new 2017 Legacy 2.5i. With sunglasses on the nav screen distorts badly. When I touch the screen the distortions move around the touch point. I'm concluding this is an inexpensive screen tech as the moire patterns are reminiscent of outmoded screen tech. Have any other members experienced this screen viewing issue? Fixes, short of trying to find new prescription sunglasses? Thanks.

With [polarized] sunglasses on the nav screen distorts badly.

This is not a new phenomenon, nor is it unique to Subaru. In fact, the FAA has prohibited pilots from wearing polarized sunglasses for decades. It's even mentioned in bold print in the Legacy/Outback Owners Manual several times: pages 3-7, 5-16, and 5-25. FWIW, the same optical phenomenon was present in my factory-new Porsche 911 back in 1969.

Anti-glare screen protector (the ones with the matte surface) for tablets (computers?) works to fix the problem with polarized sunglasses. Google it and you'll see videos and stuff on it and why it works. I've used it on my tablet that I couldn't see due to polarized sunglasses and now it's not an issue at all.

I've noticed this with my 2016 Legacy as well. Polarized glasses render the screen unreadable. Another unfortunate element is angle and position of the screen itself. When driving east in the late winter afternoon, the screen is at the PERFECT angle to reflect sunlight right into my face. The screen should have been mounted to that it is more vertically oriented so it would reflect less light that comes through the side window. I've been thinking about just covering it with velcro mounted cloth...

This screen is a total fail in my book.

I'm using an anti-glare screen cover for the last 5 years.

I have no problem reading the screen with my polarized sun glasses.

I have no problem with reflection.

It's not that complicated to install, and just a few bucks.
