Finally solved the Phase I to Phase II electronics conversion

Recommended Posts

Whoa, information overload....let's start from the top now that I've had time to research what you're saying

Agreed, sorry to overpost. I may move most of this content over to the SL-i.net Sport Shift thread to declutter your thread.

You don't need to adapt anything on the ECU connector, just add in two pins and wire tap the common wires from a Phase 2 TCU input.

The problem with building a ECU adapter is finding a female header to plug into. I had to build mine from a desoldered ECU board to adapt my Phase 2 engine harness.

One of those pins is already occupied, but it should be easy enough to de-pin #61 from the '98 connector. I don't think the '99 ECU uses a direct connection to the ABS computer. I don't know if it qualifies as "Plug and Play" if someone has to manually de-pin and re-pin wires, but like you said - finding the correct headers to build a true plug-and-play harness may prove nearly impossible:

EDIT#6: According to the 1998 2.5 Phase 1 ECU diagrams, there is already a wire on the connector going to the #61 position (Anti-Lock Brake System)

The problem with the reusing the Phase 1 wiring from the TCU to the transmission is the wire under the hood that goes to the transmission. The FSM does not clearly state what each individual wire on the harness does for the transmission, thus making an adapter even harder to simply use "like wires". The only way I see this possible is if you were to just simply use the existing wiring as a "vessel" for the start and end or the adapter harness, similar to how I built the adapted engine harness.

Yes I think that's what I had in mind. Trace as many wires as possible using the available wiring diagrams, but the car's stock wiring would be isolated at each end via translation harnesses; At the TCU, at the ECU (or maybe just re-pin the few wires that require it) and of course at the Transmission harness plugs at the bellhousing. Run as many of the same signals on the '98 wires as possible, plus add any new wires as needed. Maybe I'd have to desolder headers from spare computers too to build the translation harnesses. I really, really do not want to remove my stock transmission harness from my car and replace it with a Phase 2 harness, if I am understanding your suggestion correctly.

Everything else looks like you're well on your way to figuring out the sport shifter harness. That is the part I have absolutely zero experience in, since I've never owned a Subaru with it.

Thanks to your generous sharing of the Sport Shift wiring diagrams. I haven't found them anywhere else.

Now taking my advice about a donor harness from a 3rd gen with sport shifter will definitely be the way to go. With a donor harness, you get all the plugs in the right place, the correct plug for the transmission, the plugs for the shifter, and all you need to do is feed the ECU the two wires and the TCU needs the ABS signal input.

I see the value in what you are saying here, but my ultimate goal is similar to yours: Run Phase 2 in a Phase 1 car, without changing to a Phase 2 harness (transmisssion instead of engine, in my case). Plug-and-Play adapters and a few extra wires only, if possible.

Well as it has tuned out, I went into the transmission shop today and got to talk to the owner/head tech. Quite knowledgeable about Subaru transmissions, I was in good hands. My original Phase 1 4EAT has been repaired and is on the bench ready to go back into the car, so it looks like I won't be pioneering this Phase 1/Phase 2 swap after all. However, they are going to put in the JDM Sport Shifter with my conversion harness. He encouraged me again to get an aftermarket TCU and I can actually have full manual control of my transmission... the 4-solenoid units work really well with aftermarket TCU's but the Phase 2 transmissions do not. I told him that I would still miss out on the VTD, but he explained that the the MPT differential of the Phase 1 can actually be controlled really well, but the VTD units are self-contained. So there's that. Oh and here's what broke:

Don't worry about overposting, I enjoy reading about the progress and it will help me later in the future when I move into transmission conversions, credit to your help of course for helping to expedite the process. It's a learning process for sure. It doesn't help that both of my cars are 99's so the older Legacy/Outbacks are out of my range of what I have available.

That is some epic carnage on that input shaft.

Sneak peak at the work in progress towards a more permanent solution to the conversion harness. I built a custom PCB board that will be sealed in a case. Right now, it measures 7 inches wide by 4 inches long. I hope to get it down smaller than that to fit the space requirements.

Well 2 LEGT is finally back on the road:

Original TZ-series Phase 1 4EAT transmission rebuilt, details in the link to SL-i.net above.

They put in my JDM Sport Shifter using my adapter harness for regular automatic gear selection:

Mark, the transmission shop owner/head tech, was pleased that the harness worked plug-and-play perfectly:

Clearly I need to come up with a better shifter surround, I'm thinking a bit of black neoprene. For now I've got a bit of black gaffer tape to cover the edges of the shifter. It looks awful, but hopefully not for long:

Later this summer I'll look into the Forced Four shift box setup and put the Sport Shift gate and JDM Sport Shift steering wheel to actual use:

Honestly, the shifter looks out of place, but I am used to seeing my second gen shifter there, so I am biased lol.

I would suggest seeing if someone can mock up a 3D printed bezel for you to make it look better than gaffer tape.
