Bird's SC300 project

Recommended Posts

A build thread is a build thread, thought you guys might like this one as well.

I will start my LGT thread once I'm a little deeper in to it, it's minimal and boring at this point.

So, I found this SC locally for less than a grand. 220K, all stock. Runs great, has some suspension and trim/finish issues. I picked this up so to be my DD, after some minor repairs, and to give me the freedom to tear my LGT apart. Eventually I want to switch my LGT back to DD status and build something out of this car, so I started a build thread for it.

Even with the stock exhaust, the sound of a 2JZ at high revs is a beautiful thing. i can't wait to put some time in to this motor and make her scream. Can't decide if I want to shoot for 350hp all motor, or get a thicker HG and add a turbo (or turbos). Likely will keep it an auto. I think

*edit* I've noticed a trend among LGT owners of having some RWD and sporty as a second or third car. Lots of Miatas and S2k owners on here.

Stage .5: Get it to DD status. Current SITREP:

Gave her a quick wash. Will do a better detail next weekend and will clay bar and start to buff paint the weekend after. Will likely respray the hood and will need to dive in to the Pass Rear corner at some point, it's fugly.

Power Steering pump is super whiny, and PS lines are cracked and leaking. Local NAPA guy (using my dealership discount + his employee discount) quoted me what I paid for the car, $760, for a PS hose kit. I will be building my own hydraulic lines and replacing fittings / adapters as necessary. Should cost about $20 in material.

Front LCA bushings are completely hooped, can feel and hear every single bump and change in direction. Have Prothane bushings being delivered this week, and will be replacing them next weekend.

Struts are weak / blown. Picked up a great condition set of factory springs and struts for $100, will replace them while doing the LCA bushings.

Rear brakes worn, easy fix while doing suspension.

Door panels are torn up, broken and shabbily repaired. Found a local ish guy with a set in good condition. Drove down yesterday and swapped door panels with him, makes a big difference in interior aesthetics.

Seats suck. Looking for a set of decent seats, not too picky as long as they are supportive and look decent.

Will be fixing trim pieces as I go, but the big things are to get the brakes and suspension up to snuff and get an alignment done.

Always liked these cars. Add 1UZ and manual swap for a nice GT cruiser. Or just hit the Easy button and turbo the 6...

Good luck with your build!

I'm going to EASY button this one, after my LGT is "done". Thicker headgasket, turbo manifold, find something that pushes 15-18 psi. I'm shooting for 450 - 500 whp and a manual gearbox. Nothing crazy, but definitely more than enough for any situation. :spin:

My close friend has a '91 Celsior, with 1UZ. I am working on talking him in to a manual swap and small supercharger.

Got a bunch of parts ready to be torn down and installed this week / weekend. New control arm bushings, KYB struts and OEM Springs and rear brake pads.

I'm excited to get this stuff installed and throw it on the alignment rack at work. I'll take some tear down / install pics as I go

Forgot to update this after finding the source of my "clunk". Need to do a better alignment soon, and keep picking away at little things, like the block of wood that is holding up my driver's door glass. Or the misaligned sunroof that doesn't open happily. Or the lack of turbos...

Holy buckets this car is fun to drive though. I can't wait to put sticky tires on it and rally some mountain passes
