Jimmye212
My car is almost completely put back together after a head gasket job. Nothing mechanical inside the engine was replaced, since everything looked good. The pistons and cylinder walls got cleaned up and the new head gaskets are in and everything is sealed with ARP head studs. All other seals and gaskets that are included in a head gasket set were also replaced. I've also included a few other upgrades, but nothing to do with the engine. I've searched the forums but can't find information on break-ins after just a head gasket change. Will I need to do a break in procedure once it is all finished? If so, I'm planning on using Castrol GTX 5w-30 and changing it at the break in intervals and then switching back to my normal oil, Rotella T6. Or is it fine to just continue using Rotella T6 without a break in period? Thanks!
RustyRuu
The pistons and cylinder walls got cleaned up. Thanks! Define cleaned up? Walls were honed? You took your old rings off and didn't replace them? If they came out at all then you will have to break that sucker in again.
Jimmye212
Sorry, I should have been more clear. I simply meant that the carbon deposits were cleaned off. I'll add some photos
RustyRuu
If the piston were not removed you should be in the clear, unless you wanna do some break in intervals if you were working in the wind or a dusty place with lots of people traffic to be sure it's real clean then go for it. Jimmye212
Okay thank you. The pistons were not removed. I've attached some pictures. Should I maybe do conventional oil for 300 miles or so then switch back to the synthetic Rotella T6 and call it a day? Or just stick with the Rotella
