Need to replace front Catalytic Converter - Good Aftermarket Product?

Recommended Posts

So I need to replace my front catalytic converter. I guess that's basically the exhaust manifold since it's built in. I've been looking at different aftermarket catalytic converters for my car, but I want to get the best I can, without paying for OEM. Been looking on Rock Auto, they have Dorman, Walker, and Eastern for about the same price. If it were you, which would you buy?

I've heard some bad things about Walker, but I'm looking for input from experienced people.

My car is a 2008 Legacy, 2.5, naturally aspirated.

Also, just a side question, my oil filter is located smack dab in the middle of the exhaust manifold, and I burnt my hand the last time I changed my oil. Does anyone have a good oil filter wrench they can recommend to me for removing it in the future? What's your preferred method for getting it off?

Get something like that to help get your oil filter off if you're having trouble. Make sure not to use that to tighten down the oil filter (or if you do, be mindful) so as not to over-tighten it.

Also, wear some old gloves when you change your oil so your hands don't get burned.

I'm not very well educated about catalytic converters. All I know is they are really expensive. I'm sure if it fits and if it does its just that any brand would be fine. I imagine that lower price ranges may have larger probabilities of cheap metal and imminent rust, as with any exhaust part.

oil change wise i have a fumoto valve and i use filter pliers from harbor freight if its still tight to start it unscrewing

http://www.harborfreight.com/oil-filter-pliers-61477.html

then i jam a pocket knife or awl into the filter first so it drains out before pulling it off ... less burns

then i put a styrofoam or coffee cup on it and spin it off

or you could buy this or make something like this with your cup wrench and a cv fixer boot kit

or make something like this with your cup wrench and a cv fixer boot kit and cup wrench and rtv silicone to seal around the lip
