ktm200
Have been using the Purolator PureOne for a few years now, the yellow one with the grippy coating, PL14162. Went to pick one up today at advance auto parts and it's a new version with the same part number. Just called purolator one. Blue with a smooth finish. Here is the old yellow: http://m.advanceautoparts.com/h5/r/shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/purolator-pureone-oil-filter-pl14610/5700001-P And the new blue: https://www.amazon.com/Purolator-PL14612-PurolatorOne-Oil-Filter/dp/B000E8T81U Anyone else come across this swap? Sales associate said the yellow ones are being discontinued. Kind of a bummer. Big fan of the grip when I'm taking them off.
Max Capacity
I use a Vibrant silicone hose coupler that slips over the smooth filter and gives you a nice grip. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Engine Build - Click Here
whitrzac
The blue grippy ones have been discoed too... time to find a new filter brand.
pseank
I use Subaru filters on all my subies especially my lgt because I know the bypass is properly calibrated. That said I use AC delco on my 86 Chevy k10 AC delco on my 93 Chevy powered Mercruiser blue water inboard and Purolator on my Samurai because Suzuki changed theirs and the new ones bottomed out metal to metal hand tight. Always oem when I can... Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Phate
I use Mazda RX8 oil filters or Subaru Blue's on the legacy. The accord gets Purolator classic/napa wix filters because I don't care. GF's Fit gets the newer expensive Purolators because tiny low-power engine with synthetic oil and long OCI's.
Max Capacity
Another trick I've used in the past, line the inside of the metal band/strap wrench with double back masking tape and stick some 80 grit sandpaper to the it. That will grip the filter. I have also found that if you install the filter correctly by hand, it will come off by hand. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). quick4dr
On by hand off by hand, I usually brake it loose then put a solo cup over it as I unspin it so the oil drains in the cup and not my manifold wrap. Then I clean the surface lube my new oil filter seal, prefill my Tokyo Roki filter and then thread it on till snug, plus a little turn. no leaks
TECouz13
It's the same filter just marketing the pureone has changed looks a few times over the years. They just launched a new BOSS filter as well.
doobaruGT
Have been using the Purolator PureOne for a few years now, the yellow one with the grippy coating, PL14162. Sales associate said the yellow ones are being discontinued. Kind of a bummer. Big fan of the grip when I'm taking them off. I noticed this nearly 6 mo ago. I called purolator and they said it just had to do with a supplier part change. Essentially, it was just superseded. I don't know if that necessarily means improvement, but the box indicates the same filtering ability. I was forwarded to one of the engineers but I never got a response from him. I left the vm while he was on vacation so I probably just slipped through the cracks and I never cared enough to pursue it any further. The blue grippy ones have been discoed too... time to find a new filter brand. I hadn't heard this. Oh well... We just bought a '17 FXT for my bride so I'll likely make the switch to the Subaru filters, though I thought there was chatter some time back about them going subpar on quality. I'll have to see what I can dig up. Updated parts list since original part-out here. Original Full part-out of my LGT HERE!
ktm200
Thanks for the replies guys and thanks for the suggestions MaxCapacity. The change isn't a deal killer, just preferred the old housing design. Also like the solo cup idea, hate that the filters always leak all over the place. I used to use the oem filters way back but really hate my local dealership so I switched to Purolator based on quite a few threads I saw here. Thought the bypass valve was pretty close to oem and a little more filter capacity. Know I can order oems online, but just convenient grabbing something available close by. acumenhokie
Glad to see this thread. I have the same experience as OP and was wondering about those blue filters. For now I bought them and am using them (on my 2nd). I looked a while ago over at BITOG but couldn't find anything.
WahooNo2
New number now is pl14615 with the better bypass valve (20-30psi) http://www.pureoil.com/en/do-it-yourself/online-catalog/filter-lookup/ I have been using the fram ultra with metal reinforced media and grippy stuff. If you just want it to be grippy you could spray paint the filters with rubber undercoating or grippy paint or tape. Or use a silicone glove or trivet. https://www.amazon.com/LotFancy-Resistant-Silicone-Barbecue-Textured/dp/B018QLEZ2I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476747285&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=silicone+gloves+bbq&psc=1 When I change my oil I stab the filters with an awl or pocket knife to drain it. Then I use a styrofoam coffee cup like mc cafe so I burn myself less
