BL/BP More Aerodynamic Windshield Surround?

My 2005 Legacy's windshield surround needs to be pulled off to seal the leaking windshield (and fix the stupid rust). I noticed that my 2012 has a minimalist surround (I actually figured it wasn't installed when windshield was replaced by previous owner), but comparing to other 2010+ Outbacks they have minimalist surrounds too.

I'm kind of wondering if we could just keep the surround off on the 05-09's similar to 2010+.

Took the surround off the parts 05 Legacy that I have to see what it would look like without it.

The windshield is not a smooth transition to the roof:

Here is the 12 Outback to compare against:

Next part was the windshield sides, the gap is much bigger then on the 2012.

Another pic of how big the gap would be without the surround (read: probably too big and water will pool).

Now that simply removing the surround is out of question I'm going to start hunting for a universal one that's more aerodynamic, I need to remove the existing surround to seal the windshield anyway (A pillars get wet in the rain).

I feel like i saw something like this for a wagon in yahoo auctions. It was basically a a flush mounted rubber surround. Lemme see if i can find it.

I bought an auto be more involved in my uninvolvedness . 200k+ Club
