Engine Swap with EZ30D

Recommended Posts

I won't do this for some time, but I'm going to ask anyway. Also, I don't know if this is the right forum, but it seemed like the best place for this.

Is it possible to do an EZ30D engine swap on my 2007 Legacy 2.5GT Limited 5EAT? My current engine is a turbo EJ25.

If it is possible, would I be able to add a turbo to the EZ30D? I'm not even sure if there is enough room. There really is no point to a 6 cylinder swap unless I can still fit a turbo (since a turbo EJ25 has the same hp as a non turbo EZ30D).

On top of all that, if I am being stupid and going against everything a Legacy GT is, please let me know. I know a 6 cylinder engine swaps on a BRZ is considered blasphemous, but I don't know about Legacy GTs. I honestly just prefer the sound of most 6 cylinder engines. That, a power gain, and a new project are the primary reasons I'm considering this.

Finally, how hard would something like this be? Would I need to upgrade other parts to compensate for the power increase (I'm referring to components not being capable of enduring increased stress from the added hp)? I'm assuming I would need to upgrade the the intake, exhaust, and intercooler (possibly other cooling components for oil or something). Thanks for any help in advance. I'm still trying to learn about these things.

Just do what most of us do and put a little bigger turbo on and get a great tune.

But if you want to do a sway...how deep are your pockets ? You can do anything if you have enough money.

Aren't there a couple of guy's on youtube called "Gramps" that do something like that ?

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

Like I said, probably won't do it for some time, if I do it at all. I thought it wouldn't be too difficult to do a swap since the 2008 Legacy GT had 3.0R model. I doubt Subaru would make two engine bays for a single year of a car. I assumed the EZ30D would fit without too much chassis work.

^mechanically it will fit easily with the ez30 subframe, but the hard part is the harness/ecu work. its easier to start with a car wired for the ez30 from the factory than it is to convert from a EJ25 car.

Mighty Car Mods swapped a 6 cylinder into a Liberty wagon. The first build was "Gramps", the second was "Super Gramps".

So yes it is possible, they also hung a Garret (I think) turbo and tuned on e85. Keep in mind, these guys had 100% access to fabrication and boost specialists as well as tuner that dedicated a lot of time making the setup work.

On Mighty Car Mods they used a EZ36 motor out of a Tribeca (or 5th Gen Legacy) to swap into Gramps; which was a 2nd Legacy wagon (Liberty in Europe and Australia) until it got wrecked while waiting for paint in a rain storm with no windows :( Then they decided to continue the build in a 4th Gen LGT Wagon and swapped everything over to that chassis becoming Super Gramps!!

But like jamguitarist mentioned they had a lot of expert guidance and assistance with the build, most notably the partnership with Haltech to run the motor. It's a great bunch of videos to watch on YouTube, so if you have time and want to see an awesome 13 part install covering everything involved, check it out.

With the ECU and wiring harness from a 4th Gen JDM 3.0 Spec B 6MT, you could likely make all of it work, easily, as the USDM 5MT harness and ECU would not be compatible with the USDM 3.0Rs. They are all 5EAT and have an integrated TCM. Still some work, but think you'd be further ahead with an ECU and harness that are designed for H6 and MT.

Then use a stand-alone like MegaSquirt or handle everything when you upgrade to boost.
