johnt671
Just put a new air filter in my 08 2.5i limited. I noticed the mesh screen after the air filter, so I used some air to back flush the mesh. It seemed clean as nothing blew out of it when I flushed it. Anyone know the purpose of it and/or know what would happen if I removed it? Thanks. apexi
It's a pzev thing. I don't think anything bad would happen if you were to remove it, but I can't think of a good reason to remove it either. It must create a little extra restriction, but I still don't think it's worth it to remove it, at least in my opinion. http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/attachments/problems-maintenance/19989d1307485821-filter-mesh-behind-air-filter-pzev-intake.jpg
johnt671
Thanks for the info. I did look restrictive but it serves a purpose so I'll leave it alone.

Phillip J. Fry
this is very odd. the only time my air filter smelled of gas was when my coil pack on cly 1 was loose. which eventually fell out and then i found an answer to a few weird symptoms. after 9.5 years i see subaru is a cheap running company. they cut corners where they can. and its all over the place. my 07 gt has lighted driver and passenger mirrors. the 2013 forester xt has generic slides and no lights. so many other things were skimped on. anyways i believe this filter is a bandaid for the lack of a properly working combustion system. its for emissions in some form or another at the expense of performance. check the spt catalog see if there is an intake available. id bet there is no extra filter if there is. i will seriously challange this... "HC traps are built to last the life of the vehicle, and are therefore not serviceable or removable. The required service life is currently 15 years or 150,000 miles" just like a fuel filter? if the air filter cant trap everything this HC filter wont either. its gonna get dirty eventually. i think well before 30k. my stock air filter turns black after 5k. 150k?? no way. apexi
Yeah, I'm not really sure what to make of it, how long it's good for and such. I know it's not just a Subaru thing though. My dads old 2008(?) 4Runner had one in the intake too. Probably a good thing the extra filter was there too, a mouse had completely chewed through his engine air filter, but didn't touch this extra filter.
