[BE5/BH5] Legacy Headlight Baking Guide

Recommended Posts

First things first. Here's what you'll need.

-10mm socket to remove the assembly from your Legacy

-Pry tool (butter knife, flat head, putty knife etc.)

-Phillips Screwdriver/ drill bit

-Masking tape/ blue painters tape

-A big enough oven [emoji28]

-Foil lined cookie sheet

-Adhesive to reseal the assembly

-Removal-

Remove the headlights from your Legacy, two bolts in front, one up top on the fender. All 3 should be 10mm. Pull from the fender first to unhook from the tab. Then wiggle em out making sure not to damage the headlight or your paint!

-Baking-

Set your oven to 220. As it preheats take out the 5 screws from the back of the housing, and remove the white hook from the bottom (2 screws.) Remove the bulbs and rubber gasket from the main bulb. Put tape over each bulbs hole.

Place the prepped assembly on a foil lined cookie sheet. Make sure to move the oven racks around to fit the assembly easily.

I baked for 8 minutes at 220° F. It's gonna be hot, so Glove Up!

-Open the Assembly-

Use a small tool to pry the lens from the housing. I used an old butter knife and flathead screwdriver. Once you get it open a bit. Stick your fingers in and gently pull it apart. Note the tabs that hold the lens on and be gentle ;)

The glue is pretty messy so keep it off the lens as best as you can!

-Amber Delete-

There are 3 small screws that hold the bezel to the lens.

Remove these to access the Amber Relector.

It's simple to remove, just pull with your fingers, or pry with a clean small tool. It pops right out no problem!

-Painting-

I chose to paint this part of the relector to help tie it in with the bezel that I painted black too.

-Reseal-

Make sure to preheat oven to 220° when your ready to Reseal.

After you've fished painting/ removing the reflector, gently ease the bezel into the lens and secure it with the 3 screws.

Apply a bead of adhesive to the housings inner seal.

I used Clear RTV Silicone Adhesive Sealant.

Lightly press the lens and housing together but not fully.

Place in the oven for 3-5 minutes (at 220°) to get the headlights original adhesive nice and tacky. Pull it out and start pressing it back into place. If needed, apply tape to help keep pressure between the lens and housing. Secure it back together with the 5 screws you removed earlier, and replace the 2 screws that hold the hook to the bottom of the assembly.

To ensure that no moisture would get into the assembly, I applied a small bead of silicone to the seal all the way around the headlight. "Finger" or press the silicone into the seam to seal it up. (So far, so good. Just washed it today and no moisture made its way in to fog up the lens. [emoji1] )

I have cheap eBay lights. I didn't break anything. I suggest not using a screwdriver to pry and watch the brackets cause when they are warm there soft. Try pulling from right side of the head light ("inside") and where the bulbs go in. Put it back for 6-10m if it's been out for 2mins. It took me two or three goes.

Hair dryer works good if the reflector doesn't wana pop out.

I used 3m weather stripping adhesive on the inside and black rvt gasket maker on the outside. Just gotta pray it doesn't leak or condensate.

I also added my eye lids I just picked up.

Thanks for the info Rumble, mine look similar to that but mine just use the single bulb. I think the company I bought mine from also make lights like that.. perhaps the same company? Lol

Base models and L trims use the single bulb. GT and outbacks used dual beam.

I knew the Outbacks used the dual beam, but I wasn't sure about the GT. Why did they do that? It seems like it would be a pain. If you want to upgrade bulbs you have to buy 4 instead of 2
