mailman
I wound up having to swap my crossmember because the LCA bracket bent too badly to fix, so I'm doing some housekeeping like fixing my steering rack boots, oil separator plate, and swapping in an ez30 (if the cheap one I found goes forward ) Anyway I'm not sure if I should just replace the boots and o rings in the rack I have, or if I should look for a replacement. It seemed to work fine in the car, no grinding or stiffness, but on the other hand it's 20 years old and was used on the mail route for most of that. Which rhd steering racks will work well if I replace it? 96 L wagon http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160228/9bdeb5d82e37e5a67dae47c029cb99a5.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160228/f40b440dc9ebc177aa35cdcb7ff27944.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160228/ecdd4f50160093d84615527e3d3b75af.jpg
johnegg
so it was not broken, but you are going to fix it anyway. buy a good used replacement. they almost never fail, unless you drive for a really long time with torn rack bellows. or remove them from the car and take trhem apart. mailman
My bellows have been leaking grease for about a year Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
johnegg
the pictures shows that your engine has been leaking oil for a long time and has coated the outside of your rack with oil and dirt. a rack leak would not cover the entire rack, even the middle away from the bellows. mailman
I am going to clean it as a start. The boots are loose and were leaking a small amount of grease before the oil leak started. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
Zerohour
Just drain the fluid, plug the ends, and pack the gears with grease. That's what I did....except I needed the space for a downpipe. Rockauto has the RHD legacy Postal racks if you wanted brand new. Just make sure your bushings are in good shape.
