Opinion on changing headlights

Recommended Posts

I own a Ice Silver 2010 Legacy 3.6R and I would love to change my headlights (not the bulbs but the entire housing). The headlights are heavily scratched and they do not look good anymore. I was looking into some options to change them out and possibly make the car look better with the new ones.

First option: Buy these U-Style headlights

I have mixed feelings about these, mainly because they removed the stock turn signal bulb and covered it with a chrome piece. I am not a fan of the stock placement for the turn signal bulb in the 5th generation Legacy and removing it completely make it seem like something is missing. On the other hand, I do love where these lights relocate the turn signal which is to the bottom strip and that looks great! Also, the U-Bar accent lighting looks pretty good and makes the car look more aggressive.

Second option: Subaru Special Appearance Package (blacked-out) headlights but with some modifications

At first I felt like blacked-out headlights would look bad on a silver car, but then it grew on me. What are your opinions?

If I purchase these headlights, I would like to take them apart and modify them.

1. Retro-swap projectors with either:

- Morimoto bi-xenon Mini Stage 3 kit

- Morimoto Retro-Quik system designed for the Legacy

2. Add in some sort of daytime running accent lighting

3. Add halo or eagle eye lights around the projector (on a separate switch)

These are my two options that I would love to do but I would like other Legacy owner's opinions. I love the U-Bar lights but they do not seem right on a silver car and that turn signal bothers me. But I do love the customization I can get with the Appearance package headlights.

Thank you in advanced for all the replies and opinions. I look forward to them.

If you are going to modify them anyways, I would probably buy a set of used 10-12 Legacy lights.

If you're going to buy new housings, why not get the 13-14? Then you have some structure to attach a switchback LED strip, and they'll already be blacked-out if you purchase the proper ones.

The '13-'14 are not completely blackout (if the person cares about them) and are not cheap. I have been looking and they are around $600 on sale, I have yet to find an undamaged '13-14 set for sale that isn't asking near new pricing. You can buy use version of '10-'12 for much cheaper. it is just a suggestion to save some money, if someone is going to be immediately modifying a new part.

I did a double-take at the photo. Thought something looked vaguely familiar.... ;)

I ended up ditching my Anzos and doing a custom blackout job with halos (I've got pics on my profile page) because I thought they looked a little more subtle. Very much opinion based, but if you have a little bit of nerve, the job really isn't hard, just takes some time to do everything correctly.

True, would save me a little bit but I did not find a good and clean set anywhere.

I wanted to get the 2013-2014 Special Appearance Package headlights just because of that structure and design, perfect place to mount the DLR LED strip. These are the ones I wanted to get:

If interested, I can list my 2010 housings. No chips all tabs undamaged.

Thanks, but I am looking for the newer style headlights with that line design to mount the DLR LED strips.

I actually had that picture saved for a while on my computer as an idea for the headlights. It was the first time I saw those U-Bar lights when I came across the picture in this thread: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/aftermarket-headlights-221660p3.html

I really did like the Anzo's on your car but I am just worried they won't look good on my silver car. But I do agree, the blacked-out lights do look more subtle. I am willing to do the modifications carefully and take my time. I would be devastated if I mess up brand new $600 headlights. Did you like the Anzo lights?

^^^^^^^^ ditto, while I do like my ubar's, they are a little busy at the same time, hence my own retro build. Also going for a clean subtle look.

I agree, they do look a little bit too busy. I want a more simple but aggressive look. I actually saw your retro build yesterday and that is what got me really inspired to start thinking about it.

I did like them. They are unique looking and rather aggressive IMO. However, after seeing some of the blackout projects other members did on here, I realized I liked the look of halos better and there was still too much chrome in the Anzos for my desired motif. I was also getting antsy to do a project and I thought headlights would be interesting to work on.
