Humans Are Slamming Into Driverless Cars and Exposing a Key Flaw

The self-driving car, that cutting-edge creation that’s supposed to lead to a world without accidents, is achieving the exact opposite right now: The vehicles have racked up a crash rate double that of those with human drivers.

The glitch?

They obey the law all the time, as in, without exception. This may sound like the right way to program a robot to drive a car, but good luck trying to merge onto a chaotic, jam-packed highway with traffic flying along well above the speed limit. It tends not to work out well. As the accidents have piled up -- all minor scrape-ups for now -- the arguments among programmers at places like Google Inc. and Carnegie Mellon University are heating up: Should they teach the cars how to commit infractions from time to time to stay out of trouble?

Do they REALLY know they're getting into accidents twice as often? Because the report notes that all these are very minor scratch & dent cases, like minor rear-endings. Considering the amount of data being collected on the new technology, it's probably fair to say that these incidents are being reported at or near 100% of all cases. But how often does the average driver report an incident of a minor rear ending that results in scratches, or even a dented bumper? Surely not 100%, and quite possibly less than 50% ... at which point, there may be no difference in the rate of occurrence.

If they get rear ended by a car thats speeding, it is the speeders fault, so the driverless car still has a clean record...

Not if the 'smart car' is merging onto the freeway. The freeway traffic has the right away and the smart car has to yield/merge into it.

It's questionable when the traffic is speeding. One can reasonably argue that distance and time estimates for merging were based on assumptions that other drivers were obeying the speed limit, especially if one were arguing in a court over some kind of settlement. Drivers on the highway still have a responsibility to behave in a reasonable and safe manner, so you do not in fact have carte blanche to drive 120 mph while others are moving into traffic ahead of you.

That's a common misconception. California's DMV and driver test do indeed point out that it is safest to go with the flow of traffic, but never do they condone speeding under any circumstances. You are always at fault for speeding, even if the flow of traffic is speeding. It just means ALL of you are breaking the law together.

Yeah I guess you're right. I was more thinking that you shouldn't be going slow enough to impede traffic as well but this is getting off topic haha.

Guess we will still need human drivers for now :)
