questions about the vacuum/boost leak test via bpv hose

Recommended Posts

Some of you may know that one can perform a quick vacuum/boost leak test by doing the following:

1. take off the "S shaped" hose between the air box and the turbo inlet hose

2. plug off the turbo inlet hose with a spray paint can cap

3. disconnect the bpv hose from the blow-off valve

4. blow (with your lungs) through the bpv hose

5. don't let air escap through that hose and listen for leaks

Two questions about this method:

1. Is it as effective as doing a true boost leak test?

2. assuming one does not have a leak, what should be the rate of air pressure loss while I avoid air escaping from the bpv hose with my thumb? For instance, I blow through the hose and close it with my thumb. If I take off my thumb after 5 sec, air will rush back. After 10 sec, not so much. After 15 sec, almost nothing back. Is that to be expected?
