Energyblue98
Thoughts? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WHoY7xYync (It has forged rods, so it's doubtful that it's a ringland).
Energyblue98
Well, just pulled the engine and took a look.. Looks like it's crank walk. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/28/6af0eb4503a80cfc2e8dfbc27c4525f0.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/28/ba0c2c436342dfc1e40e3a4b0d99ac69.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/28/55c9787342f8361dcc33866c86df8f75.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Moderators BarManBean Posted September 29, 2015 Moderators Share Posted September 29, 2015 What the heck is crank walk? Sounds bad? "Bullet-proof" your OEM TMIC! <<Buy your kit here>> Not currently in stock
compsurge
Crankwalk: see DSM 7 bolt engine. This is one of the first cases I've heard/seen of an EJ. I do recollect someone having this type of pattern on theirs and they found it was actually machined. OP, can you verify it is from the rods? Check the clearance. It may be factory. It certainly looks like it's interference from the photos though.

Suppose that noise could be from a spun bearing. I'll let you know. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
RustyRuu
it could be the lighting but on of your rods looks dark. like it got burnt up from to much friction which would be from a spun bearing possibly that other markings on the crank case walls are a little severe i just pulled mine apart. in the image which is blurry i know, you can see the shinny under the number 2 main i think that is more of the machined in look that someone else mentioned yours look crazy. Energyblue98
I think the discoloration is just from the shadow of the picture, they all look the same to me. Small update, took all the accessories and stuff off. when i pulled the intake manifold off, I noticed that the passenger side looked fine, but there was some oil in the driver side tgv and intake manifold. So potentially valve seals?
whitetiger
What the heck is crank walk? Sounds bad? http://thoseposters.com/emailPosters/poster1431.jpg its when the crank thrust bearings wear out and it shifts longitudinally. It would be the same as when a turbo has in/out shaft play, but for the engine crank.
Energyblue98
yeah, i tired to move the crank back and forth with my hands and couldn't feel much movement. I'd be surprised if that is factory machining on the block. The engine has been rebuilt once since it has forged internals, but still..
RustyRuu
if you felt any movement its probably not got, service manual says to push from the front to the rear and measure with a feeler gauge between your crank and thrust bearing. the limit of movement (endplay) between your thrust bearing and crankshaft is .003 to .010, thats the back one (the fifth main bearing), the one with the sides. if more play than that it tells you to remove your thrust bearing and inspect it for wear and that replacing the main bearings should fix the play. Darth SpecB
These both sound like a timing belt tensioner, I would check that first with a pry bar. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
Energyblue98
this was from a year and a half ago lol. It ended up being a spun bearing.

compsurge
Similar noise? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTmivZKX5a4 Did you do a coolant change prior to this? I have had the water pump cavitate and make a noise very similar to a spun bearing. Where is your timing belt guard?

Where is your timing belt guard? No, I haven't done a coolant change recently. I took off the timing cover to check the tensioner for play. None found. Although that doesn't mean the bearings are any good. I hope to take the timing belt off this weekend to check.
