Playing with tau fueling helped a lot with the tip-in issues. Time to up the boost a little... http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr5/fahr_side/3rd_zps7uzwpetm.jpg

Note that's 3rd gear on a GRB 6MT. I'm still a little rich in places and I think I can fettle AVCS timing a little further. Car is a riot.

Been getting some smoke under high load since turning the boost up. Installed the Crawford AOS I've had sitting around for months.

worth a compression / leakdown test? Or not that serious?

If the smokescreen doesn't stop I'll look into that but it's pretty normal for the stock breathers to get a bit overwhelmed when pushing past 20psi IME.

EDIT: No longer able to provide smoke cover for escorted battleships or carriers.

After 70,000km with an unwrapped tubular header, the inevitable happens. Stock heat resistant matting gives up the ghost.

Making a new one to replace it.

40,000km on the built motor now, running like a Swiss watch.

My bad luck with turbos continues. I installed the Blouch Dominator 1.5XTR exactly a year and 20,000km ago. At the time of install I had a little smoke at sudden WOT but put that down to some issues I was having with tip-in fueling. This spring it was there any time I had the boost over about 18psi so I installed a Crawford AOS, thinking it was blow-by related.

A week ago during a WOT pull I had so much smoke following me I couldn't see anything out of the mirrors. Ooops. Next day this extended to running at idle. In idling the car 20 minutes it put about a quart of oil into the intercooler. Not good. Thinking I'd broken a piston or something I had the car towed to a friend's shop for quick diagnosis.

Oil pissing out both sides of the turbo, hot and cold.

Blouch live up to their reputation for not answering email, wouldn't even give me a quote on a CHRA or an overhaul. I have the turbo out with a specialist now to be rebuilt with a genuine Garrett cartridge swapped with Blouch's pretty billet compressor wheel and rebalanced.

Right now I'm running around on a friend's spare VF-30, counting off the days.

I try to deter people from running blouches, this is a perfect example unfortunately. We've seen a few at multiple places have issues on the dyno brand new. Best luck man.

Well, my turbo is back from being rebuilt and back on the car. The original CHRA shows a steady dribble of oil has been leaking out the hot side seal for quite some time. Probably enough to leave some carbon on the shaft which has eventually destroyed the rear seal / piston ring. I have been using the restrictor Blouch supplied, an FP oil line and had a good oil drain pathway. Considering I only put 20,000km on the turbo this is shit.

I bought a new genuine Garrett 700177-5004S cartridge for about $800. Spent another couple hundred having Blouch's billet wheel swapped over and the whole thing carefully rebalanced. Turbo swap labor x2, towing, lost fluids and blah blah... quite a bill at the end when you consider I bought an expensive turbo partly for the 'made in USA' stamp of reliability.

While I love the Blouch compressor wheels and housings I have to say the reliability just isn't there. I also have no idea why they put a contact form or email address on their website when they seem to have no intention of answering any mail traffic at all. I mailed them twice and very nicely asked about BUYING a new CHRA as mine was leaking oil, didn't mention warranty, didn't complain, but still got no answer from them at all. Zero points for after sales service.

If I were doing this over I'd have a GTX2967R built with the 90 trim turbine the Dom uses and the new Garrett Ni-resist v-band housing, GT28 style compressor housing and use the Killer B Spoolinator kit to mount it.

Wow, that's nearly rebuying the turbo... Well sounds like this one will last longer.

Maybe it'll tune a bit better, without the oil leak, ya think?

Tell me about it. The money I've spent on this shit would've bought an EFR kit.

The oil has been passing out the rear seal and into the exhaust for a while but that doesn't affect final fuel octane and promote knock. It was only the day it died that I got oil in the intake, a quart and a half of it, and that definitely would have ruined fuel octane.

I had to run the car on the dyno again after reinstalling to be sure there's no more oil smoke. It's really not safe to be watching the mirrors too long at full woot. Realized I've been running WGDC flat to redline at around 30% and could easily push another psi or so past 5k6rpm. Another few hp and a flatter torque curve is always nice :)

Third power steering pump in 138,000km. My GF went 160,000km in my hands on the original and AFAIK is still on the original beyond 200k. WTF Subaru? Put a new pump on and still not sure the steering system is sorted.

On a happier note I finally got rid of the factory grey not-fit-for-a-bird-cage carpet. My wife's Micra has nicer carpet FFS. Replaced that nastiness with the GRB black item. Car feels like it's worth about 10k more already, which makes sense as GRB content is approaching 50% now.

EDIT. It took over a month, but the PS pump did fix the steering issues. Of course in the meantime I've replaced the top-hats up front and ordered a new '15 steering rack. Ho hum.
