stewthebassman
On the much higher level models like the 7 they have "comfort seating" with rolling butt massagers, and air conditioned seats and fasntastic things like that. My lowly leatherette seats have none of that but I can sit nice and upright (no sunroof helps) and the seats are sticky and hold me in place. They never seem to sag after many miles and they have a good lower back/butt arrangement. My wife's X5 with standard seats is bombproof even on a 6 hour 600km trip! franklin
I think you're right, a good upholsterer could probably have fixed the problem under my butt. However, it's doubtful he could have lowered the back of the seat to where I could seat upright and not have my head brushing against the roof and whacking it when I hit a bump. Don't you think? Had I changed the seat outright, I would have had a whack of issues surrounding airbags and heated seats, etc... For me it was easier to scurry back to Germany with my sad little tail between my scrawny hairy legs. How tall are you? Im 6'-4'' and I fit ok? stewthebassman
6'1".. I like to sit upright with bent arms and I never seemed to be able to achieve that without a telescoping wheel and without my head hitting the roof. Also I found the cockpit kind of tight, maybe I should have just sucked it up and bought a frikkin' Toyota Avalon (now that's fugly!).
godwhomismike
When I sat in the Saab 9-3, I found the seats to be extrememly comfortable - but then again - I don't know about those who are tall - I'm pretty short.
stewthebassman
I had a 2000 Saab 9-3 and as I got up into 100,000kms the seat began to fade on me, I was almost crippled at the end of my tenure with that car....that car is brutal becuase the telescope is minimal and there is no tilt. Oh, and the torque steer, fuggetaboutit!
godwhomismike
I never sat in a BMW before. This is probably because when I was shopping for a new car last summer; I was looking at an Audi and was treated very poorly (probably because I looked young and short height). I tested a Legacy soon after that and was very impressed with how well it handled on wet roads (test drove it during a really bad storm) and how much power it had. After sitting down and reviewing the price/options/insurance of both cars (At this time I had already tested the Audi elsewhere), I found the Legacy to be just as much car for $14K less. The only time my height had affected me from not purchasing a car was a '04 Mach 1 Mustang - I was just too short and couldn't see over the shaker hood no matter how much I moved the seat up. Ok, I guess I got a bit off topic there. Good luck with your BMW, and make sure you take pictures and post them up. What color/options did you get? - Mike
stewthebassman
You dodged a bullet with the Audi Mike, from what I hear, service-wise. The hood scoop in the Subie is great - does the job and is hardly noticeable. 325xi, Sparkling Graphite, Xenons with Adaptive Headlights (can't wait for this option!!!), Auto (the Subie sold me on a good Auto!), and black leatherette. The Canadian version comes with a cold weather package already, so folding rear seats with a ski pass through, heated headlight washers, and heated seats. The wheels are basic 16", with 205/55s. The tires are runflats, let's see how that goes!!!!!!!!!!!! The basic stereo is 10 speakers with an iPod plug, which works with the steering wheel controls. Since Sirius isn't in Canada yet, but should be soon, I also opted for a Sirius prewire. When it becomes available, I'll get the radio installed, looking forward to that! There is a new feature that when the rain sensor senses rain, the brake pads will dry the brakes often, so there is no pause while the pads and rotors shed water when braking. I'll review all this stuff when I get it, and if I hate the Bimmer I'll get a Tribeca (not!!!).

fzanetti
No doubt, 325xi is a sweet ride. More $$$ though. It IS sweet but sluggish and one of the worst AWD systems among top performance cars... Good luck with it though... Drakuun
I've found that the best cure for my right leg going numb during long rides was taking my wallet out of my back pocket..
Bob N
I think the new 3 looks great. Only if you get the sport package. The stock 205/55/16 wheels don't filll the wheel wells and it is "fugly". Looks good with the 225/45/17 (front) and 255/40/17's in the back. Gotta get the sport package + double spoke alloy wheels. Those pizza cutters (205/55/16's) just over emphasize the fat fenders on the Bimmer.
MtnSub
I had a BMW3 before and I just spent a week driving my son's BMW325xi, 5MT wagon. The BMW seats are better for larger people. My son is 6'2" and he likes his BMW seats better than mine. You cannot deny the quality of the BMW interior, but better tires deliver instant sharpness. Driving my son's BMW325 reminded me of just how much more fun and powerfull the LegGT is than all other sport wagons. My son also notes that the LegGT shifter has a shorter throw and feels less rubbery and we are talking BMW vs LegGT! Granted I have the SS in my LegGT. My LegGT/Ltd wagon with 5MT/SS and 18/225 Proxes4s all around will be a year old next month. I make numerous trips to San Deigo(240 mi rt) and Mammoth(600 mi. rt) and for my body, the LegGT is more comfortable than my wifes new Range Rover or my sons BMW. I love the way the LegGT handles (much better with Proxes4 18s) and I can drive all day without any lower back pain or pressure points. After saying all these good things about the LegGT, it looks like Subaru is not interested in my future business because they no longer offer a MT sport wagon, just AMT. BMW will be sending the 330 engine to the states in a 6MT, AWD, wagon next year and If Subaru does not bring back the MT sport wagon, I will be back to BMW when my Subaru hits 48k miles. I bet you will like your BMW seats better and you will like the BMW AMT better, but you will miss the total lack of thrust punch in the back of your seat offered by the LegGT engine. stewthebassman
The new BMW xDrive which is offered in the E90 BMW should be spectacular, Flavio. I have spoken to X3 owners, and its winter performance is very good. I will report back in January after trying it. Yes the 16" wheels and tires are girlish, but I can't afford the sport package, and the sport wheels and tires are just "asking for it" in the Montreal area, where our road budget goes 85% to local Mafia and other gang members and the rest is left for the actual roads. And once Montreal winters are done the potholes are enoromous. My service manager at BMW told me how many expensive sport wheels he changes (with expensive runflat tires too). I can live with the 16 inchers for now. Drakuun, I never wore my wallet in my back pocket... I tried Yoga, running, cushions (just made my head bump the roof sooner), etc etc etc. Do you think I would take a hit on a 40k car after three months if I weren't desperate for comfort? I hated the BMW manual tranny in my '04 325i, just hated it. I loved the 5EAT in my Legacy. The Steptronic in the 325 will be acceptable, I hope. I'm hoping that Conforti or some other company will sell a chip later on that will perhaps change the torque curve of the 325xi a bit, but obviously it won't come near a Legacy. The E91 325xi wagon is beautiful. I would have enjoyed one of those too, but it isn't really necessary for me. Hey I had fun in that car, it just didn't work out! Chappy
Good luck Stew with the BMW..I had a 97 328i and it was the most comfortable car I have ever driven. It had the sport package Recaro's. Great comfort. I got out of my WRX after 9 months because my back couldnt handle the stupid bucket seats. I took a pretty bad hit on the trade in but I have a bad back and I just couldnt drive it comfortably anymore. The LGT is alot more comfortable and Im happy with it. Go the route that works best for you. It seems like you get a new car every 10,000km so if this one doesnt work out got for a 5 series! Good luck with it and enjoy it. Being in an uncomfortable car sucks.
GT05Quebec
I'm a little late on this one. Ahhh! Back problems ... I had a L5-S1 discal hernia in 2005 (hooked on morphine since ) and find that the front seats of my LGT were great for my back. I really cannot say the same for my 2003 Honda Odyssey . pedzola
+1 for hating LGT seats. My '03 civic was way more comfortable than this car. Drove my friends 5-series before and felt more like sitting in a living room than in a car, but if thats your thing.... Hello consumer. And I say unto you, please use exact change. This is my shark. stewthebassman
Wow, how about a thread bump, eh? Two things I think went against me in the LGT....one, the sunroof lowered the roof too much for the position I liked, and two, no telescope wheel. For fun I have tested a Mazda3, a 2006 Honda Civic, and a VW Golf GTI (the new one). They all have the telescoping wheel, which really makes a difference. I'm really enjoying the Bimmer. Winter wasn't very exciting, we didn't have many storms in Quebec. Just a lot of freezing rain, thaw, freeze, and a bit of snow. It was really unusual, so I didn't get to enjoy my AWD quite enough. stewthebassman
Wow! A five-month bump! I hope stewthebassman is happy with his 325xi after driving it through one Quebec winter. He was going to report back in January. Here is the review I posted in December. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24630 At 21,000kms, the seats and ergonomics are perfect, even the right foot. I rarely need to use cruise it is so perfect. The only thing I don't like about the car is: we have had a lot of frost heaves this winter, so the roads are full of hard bumps. It appears that the Runflat tires and/or the suspension have a hard time with this, and really bottom hard. I have to slow down a lot when I see big bumps on the road ahead out here in the country. Reports from my brethren elsewhere indicate that a change to regular tires return the car to normal. I will wear out this set and put non-Runflats on next summer with a can of slime etc. in the trunk.
