T_Altland27
Ok can you give me a lesson on coil packs? All I know of is plugs and wires never had to change coil packs before so what's the difference?
orndog
Coil packs are just what makes the electricity that goes through the spark plugs. They have existed in different forms for... decades. Older ignition systems had one pack on top of the distributor. Then we moved to mounting one for every two spark plugs on top of the engine somewhere. You can also have a "coil on plug" which is a small coil pack clipped on top of each spark plug. *Other forms of ignition have existed as well. You only have to change them if they are weak, fail, or become physically damaged. Then they really should be replaced as a set.
T_Altland27
Ok thanks for the info I've only dealt with plugs and wire on my Chevy Silverado when I gave it a tune up
GEE-OTTO
Back in the day we swapped out OEM for MSD coils they made us 2.5RS guys feel like we were doing something Paired with piggyback one could adjust spark duration and timing and really squeeze out the potential of the EJ25D/1 . When you think about it a central coil pack is soooooooo much more easy to diagnose than Coil on plug like our LGT cousins (05-09) One thing you should appreciate, you never hear of us having to swap coils to track down a P0300/1/2/3/4 code. lancerswimmer89
The only thing that MIGHT beat an OEM coil pack, would be if you do the MSD Coil Pack upgrade from a late 90's Dodge Neon. That involves a bit of work on your end, but the results are supposed to be pretty good.
GEE-OTTO
MSD makes a Subaru Specific CP no need to fiddle with a dodge part esp for a EJ253
