Cerebral_1
Something weird happened to my 05 OBXT 5 speed MT (Stage 1, upgraded to Kartboy shifter bushings)...after a hard shift from 1st to 2nd, I heard a loud pop from the center console area. The car seemed to drive fine immediately afterward and took me home, but later that day it got strange. After I got back into the car and onto the highway, I shifted into 5th and the shift knob extended inches beyond where it normally does (almost touching the radio console), without actually engaging 5th gear. I moved the shifter back to neutral and was able to finesse it and find 5th. It's now doing this same thing (but only occasionally) when shifting into 3rd and 5th. When I do actually find the gears, it stays in them solidly and holds fine. Pulling the knob, surround, and outer/inner boot off today, it looks like the socket/cup-like piece broke (the piece toward the end of the stay that surrounds the ball at the end of the shifter rod). I wonder if it's the sort of thing (problem with the stay) in this thread: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/need-part-5mt-shifter-assembly-149776p2.html Has anybody seen this before or otherwise have insight on this? Is this just a matter of replacing the stay, or something more substantial?
Cerebral_1
Here are pics I took with the outer boot and inner shroud off. You can see the O-ring out of place and the "basket" (or whatever it's called) with the snap ring broken into multiple pieces. Will this cause my shifter ball from rising out of the socket? Cerebral_1
At the very least, the piece shown in the pic under step 7 in the link below appears to be broken (the "basket" with the snap ring around it)... http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/kartboy-sts-front-bushings-install-16708.html?t=16708&highlight=short+throw+install Any thoughts on whether or not this is the culprit? Or is something else likely broken as well?
Max Capacity
Hard to tell from the pictures, but you need to remove that bolt and lift the shifter out and replace whats broke. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Cerebral_1
I am going to remove the shifter today... Has this happened to anyone else on here? Does anyone know if it's just the plastic cup ("basket" with the snap ring) in the socket that needs to be replaced? Or if there is more to the socket than that, like the entire stay? Sorry, relative newbie here! Thanks!!
Max Capacity
http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/subaru-oem-parts-catalog-online-exploded-views-opposed-forces-130411.html You can see the parts there. I'd link you to the service manual but I don't have it saved on this PC. Cerebral_1
Max Capacity, you da man! I took the stock shift rod out and it looks like the socket at the end of the stay is fine. The cup bushing inside the socket basically exploded, so I just ordered a new one for a few bucks from a local stealership...should get here on Friday. Was planning on getting a Kartboy STS later on, but might as well put it in there now since I am taking the stock shift rod out anyway...ordered one as a Christmas present for myself
