Connella08
ive got a 2002 legacy gt with the ej251 that i bought with blown HG's. i had the heads shaved and put on felpro mls head gaskets and a new thermostat and it drove fine for 5,000 miles. car started to over heat again so i replaced thermostat yet again along with radiator and radiator cap. drove fine for another 600 miles then started over heating again. replaced water pump and drove fine for another 200 or so miles and now over heating yet again. i dont understand whats going on, but i might do head gaskets again unless you guys can think of anything else. lower hose seems to be much colder than the top hose and when left running without the cap on, it seems to push all the coolant out of the radiator. any thoughts? GEE-OTTO
Sadly it sounds like your HGs have failed again Exhaust gases are getting out and pushing the coolant out. When you milled the heads did you check the block mating surface for true? Many times when the HGs are replaced after they over heat rather than before the block warps slightly and needs to be milled with the heads. If that is the case you might as well pull the engine and do the whole job.
BoozeRS05
OEM thermostat? Only OEM thermostats.. EB's Subaru journal - 2005 LegacyGT Wagon & 2014 Forester FB25 (2008 specB - RIP) IG@legacygtliving
GEE-OTTO
that is a good point what Thermo are you using? After I installed the Gates timing kit I had this same problem turned out the Gate T-stat was trash from the start replaced with a OEM Subaru and never a problem again. Its cheaper than HGs

Wheelbuilder_25
Check the coolant bypass pipe too. My Dad and I chased this around on his Forester. It had a pinhole in it, and he had just put in a non-OEM thermostat with his timing belt.
Connella08
I had put in a non oem one when I did the head gaskets and it drove with no issues for over 5,000 miles then one day started over heating. It was taken to a dealership and they said the combustion chamber was leaking into the cooling system pushing the thermostat closed. I'm just ripping it down again and doing it over. YeuEmMaiMai
this time you need to check the BLOCK as well if you are going to mill your heads, take the time to do the block as well... also do NOT use cheap Chinese knock off head gaskets, they do not last
Connella08
I'm definitely going to be checking the block and the heads for straightness. I used felpro mls gaskets for the heads.
Connella08
So I got the passenger side head off and I found a headbolt in the middle that was loose. Unfortunately it was loose because I over tightened it and through the heating cycles, it pulled the threads out with it. Time for helicoils. Connella08
Alright, so I got the helicoils in the block. I did 2 stacked on each other for more thread engagement. I will be getting new gaskets soon and throwing it back together sometime this week. I will post updates as I progress.
Brian3676
I suggest replacing the bolts as well. I have used Felpro head bolts many times, never failed me. I know 99% of people re use them, I personally re use them almost always too, but in your case I would replace.
