2013 Headlight Hawkeye Build Thread

Recommended Posts

  • 10 months later...

I changed my mind and decided to go a different route. Here's my reasoning:

1) I was afraid the cover would fall off during driving (CITY/COUNTRY POTHOLES).

2) Peripheral light leak. If you look at all cars with led drls, the light is aimed forward. In my previous design I would have the lights in front of everything. This would mean that light would be uncontrollable.

3) Adding switchback option. I need space to add more LEDs so I could have the switchback function. Doing it this way gave me that space.

4) A more oem fluid look. Why do this if its going to look like a hacked up POS! But that's me.

So I scratched that plan and decided to take the dremel to it! And I did this...

Day 1

If you are going to do this please take your time. Even with my hand braced, and me taking my time I still had a few hiccups! I might just get some chrome spray to fill all those bad areas, and I will be also painting the housing black!.

Days 2-4

I got around to making the new light shield that will take the place of the chrome piece that I cut out.

Step 1: Paper Mold ( I just taped paper on and pressed down really hard/then cut it out... really accurate!!!?

Step 2: Place cutout on plastic and trace bigger than paper (Incase it wasn't an accurate impression.

Step 3 (no picture): But here I cut out the rough shape of my outline. To cut it out I used a table saw. To my surprise it worked better than a jigsaw. I tried a jigsaw but ended up breaking a piece off. When cutting acrylic fast is better!

Step 4: I started to fine tune my template. To do this I used a dremel and belt sander. The belt sander is the best option to get this plastic piece within mm of my opening. Sorry I don't own a vernier caliper to show you but you just have to trust me!!!

The bottom corner fitting:

Top main piece fitting

Whole piece:

In this picture you will notice that only the top and bottom fit in place. To get it to fit I will have to heat up the acrylic. The plan is to use tiny amounts of hot glue to hold the unit in place. Then, I will use weldon-4 to get the atomic level bonding between the acrylic and plastic. This way I will have no worries about driving and it popping out.

The trusty belt sander:

Projects for the upcoming weeks:

Bond the two peices

Solder leds together

Order morimoto switchback box

Paint

Clear lens housing

HID Cutoff

Repeat for the other side

Just a quick update. I haven't been able to move forward since my supplies haven't come in yet. Should be all here this week! So I will keep you posted. Just had two quick questions maybe someone can help me answer as simple as possible.

1. What do I need to do to hookup OEM back camera to HU in my 13. I read the lengthy post on this forum but I am not getting. So if someone can simplify it for me that'd be great!!

2. I would like my drls to be triggered by ( Dome light/and current drl) How do set that up? Do I need relays? How do I wire it.

The domelight is triggered by the body unit so you would need to possibly use some relays and diodes so you don't backfeed the power to the dome when the car is running. Are you trying t get your drl to come on when you unlock your doors? It think I would use the smaller position lights and wire them directly into the interior light circuit while using some nice bright LED bulbs and just tie off the stock connection. So they would work exclusively with the interior lights.

Thank you so much for this information! I will be pming you sometime next week to see if I can add this function.

As for updates the lights are done. I've been studying for entrance exams into grad school. As soon as I take the tests I will post all pictures and wiring. I promise it'll be worth the wait!!!!

I have a basic understanding of how the wiring in our cars works, there are certainly those on the forum with much better knowledge. Put it out in a thread and you will get some attention as I am sure others would love to do this mod as well.
