Koni Adjustable Strut Inserts with Ground-Control Coilover Conversion for BK Wagon

Recommended Posts

i only have the rear racelands on my wagon so far, but at full height for the GD set they are as tall as the stock set up. i have to take it all apart and lower it a lot more. if the GC were indeed shorter, id say there may not be enough travel to make them work on my wagon.

What I think is cool about this Ground-Control setup is that not only can you change the ride height with the spring perches like any other coilover, but also you have the choice of many spring lengths and rates to try out. I don't have experience with coiovers of any brand, but I suppose other brands might be able to do this too. My impression of most cheaper imported coilover sets is that they are pretty much a set that you don't change springs because the dampers is deigned to work with the spring that the coilover was originally assembled with. I think I have read that some of the imported coilover set use non-standard spring dimensions, limiting one's choices of trying out other springs.

The shortened bump travel that I am reading about seems to be more of a Koni insert issue than it is a Ground-Control issue, although lowering the car with G-C Eibachs or any other lowering spring just makes the short Koni bump travel in a Legacy worse.

It is good to know, though that your setup can go up to stock ride height, thanks for sharing that info.

ya, wasnt sure if it was actually relevant, just a thought. if youre lowering by the spring preload, arent you changing the distance of the bump stop as well? i was surprised the coilovers i got have separate height adjustment from the preload adjustment. can you adjust height for the insert separately from the spring length?

I'm not quite sure if I am understanding you questions since I have no personal experience with any coilovers, but you can either either screw the lower spring perch up or down on the threaded strut insert (like most other coilovers) to change ride height, and/or you can swap out one set of spring for another set with a different length and/or rate (unlike some coilover sets). Ride height, bump travel, droop travel, and preload can be affected by changing one or more of those variables. However, I think that changing one aspect will tend to affect the others. So for example adjustment of preload is likely to affect ride height as well (depending on the spring you are using), assuming all other components are unchanged.

You can have a look at Ground-Control's product page for Impreza/WRX ($$$) conversion kit here:http://www.ground-control-store.com/products/description.php/II=82/CA=90

And this is Ground-Control's extra fancy full custom Koni coilover setup for WRX ($$$$): http://www.ground-control-store.com/products/description.php/II=898/CA=90

The links above are not intended to be product endorsements. I have not used any of these products, though I have heard good things about them.

Over 2 1/2 years later this still makes me LOL.

I finally picked up a stock Outback swaybar from the Pick-N-Pull last week, and I am looking for the correct upgraded endlinks to go with it. I've had my eye on some used Kartboy C-shaped WRX endlinks on my local craigslist. I think they are correct for Legacy as well, can anyone confirm?

From http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4796018&postcount=3617:

Don't know about the WRX Endlinks I'm afraid. You may need to hunt down a size chart of them and compare them. Could you post a picture of that stock swaybar? I've never seen one and can't find any pictures.

This must be where I got the idea that most C-shaped endlinks will work - from the main suspension sticky:

Bushings, mounts, and endlinks

The bushings in the endlinks and on the swaybars are made of rubber and they flex. That reduces the effectiveness of the swaybar. Replacing them with urethane or spherical endlinks is generally a good idea and really improves responsiveness because the bushings and endlinks aren't flexing as much before the swaybar loads, and will cause the swaybar to load more quickly. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that urethane bushings need to be well greased or they will bind and pop and possible tear apart. Whiteline makes urethane bushings in most sizes. Spherical bearings will also wear and eventually start to make noise.

The rear swaybar mounts have been known to break with larger swaybars. Whiteline, Perrin, and Cobb all have stronger mounting brackets available. The cheapest replacement option, however, are the 04-07 Impreza mounts, which are reinforced. They use a new bushing, and that Whiteline part number is W0406-[mm].

As far as endlinks go I'm partial to Kartboy and Whiteline but pretty much anything will work.

And then this I remember reading about too:

I saw a post somewhere about using endlinks from some Audi. solid and dirt cheap. hope that's descriptive enough, lol

EDIT - Boom:

If you want a different brand, just select 2004 Passat GLS 2.8L and search for "sway link". I was able to get one Febi-Bilstein from autopartswarehouse and the other side from pelicanparts.com.

The VW part numbers are:

8D0 411 318 D - Passenger Side

8D0 411 317 D - Driver's Side

So I went ahead and got the VAG endlinks! $34 and change with tax out the door, same day, from my FLAPS. Now I gotta clean up that dirty swaybar, give it a blast of paint, and mount it up. According to the other writeups, a few washers are needed to get the endlink mounts spaced just right, so I swung by the hardware store for some stainless washers.

Outback rear swaybar and VAG aluminum endlinks are in, me likey.

Stock GT setup:

Stock - not real straight, huh? Remember, I'm on ramps, not jacks, so this suspension is fully loaded:

The Passat endlinks, unlike the stock plastic Subaru parts, have a wide end and a narrower end. From reading the other writeups on this mod, the narrow end seemed a little small on the lateral link mount, but the wider end is too large to fit here. I got some stainless washers to make up the difference, but there was only room for one washer:

I greased up the stock Outback rubber swaybar bushings:

The VAG endlinks are straighter on the bottom than the stock ones, but not at the top. Wondering if I ought to swap sides.

I decided to swap endlinks sides last weekend:

That's awesome! Someone should compare them with the competition.

BTW, I have the same Stanley work table and love it. It's too bad they stopped making it. I had a garage sale once and a guy walked into the garage pleading me to sell it.

Are those some Pilot Sport AS3's?

Yes.

Haha awesome. I like it okay, and I was recently looking around town for something else like it for my paint project. I ended up getting some cheap IKEA wire racks on casters.
