Just bought My05 OBXT

Recommended Posts

Not sure if I'm in the right place for the 05 outback XT  I used to use bbs.legacycentral for my 91 turbo legacy.. someone recommended legacygt for my 05:confused:

bought for $4k with smashed front and rear bumper with 180k super clean and dealer maintained with factory replacement parts... even has a subaru battery :D

So i think i have a new turbo, i know a have a recent timing belt.(only 20k on it)

Drives straight and tight down the road. good wear on the tires.

I'm concerned about the tranny. should i do the valve body mod? will that ext life or speed it up at this point?

Also rear 02 is triggering dash light and cruise doesn't work :/ i'll search forums for those latter... unless someone can point me in the right direction :D

Did the no seat belt beeping fix(plug/unplug 20 times) that was so cool! Its freaking cold here and i was trying to talk on the phone while i filled up with gas and that dam beeping was annoying!!

Intercooler looks tight no leaks. gonna replace oil and takeout the banjo filter thing if i have time today.

Also i want to make a journal thread of my car and keep the first post updated with things I've done to the car... which sub forum should a use for that?

Good Luck with the banjo filter. You must have a warm place to work on her ?

Oh, the valve body upgrade will only help the tranny, not the other way around.

I'd wait for the banjo filter till you do a catless up pipe. It will be easier then.

I probably need to start a 5eat thread. thats my biggest concern with it having 180k. I dont want to do the up or down pipe or even a tune tell i know this car is rock solid.

I've seen nothing to indicate this car has ever been abused.

but I don't wanna add a catless up/down pipe and tune then blow the tranny and then have this beauty rot in my driveway.

I'm not going to be launching it, but i do have a very heavy foot. I'd be happy if the trans lasts another 50k.

so i guess i'll add valve mod and trans cooler to my to do list.

Once i actually get some real work done on it, i'll add a link to my first post to the build thread.

Thanks to some simple words from Rao  and some timely motivation from Apex-GT, and of course the Factory Service Manual, I feel confident now that I can tear down and rebuild my 5eat, which suffers from a worn clutch packs= and perhaps some other issues that I believe are limited to wear parts. I may screw it up altogether, but you never get to find out if you don't try.

I have some other very exciting 5eat stuff in the pipeline, but one thing at a time is enough :)

So it's time to pick a kit. I will contact FBP to see what they would sell a 2005 LGT 5eat rebuild kit for. There are other ones online. Please weigh in if you know anything about this kind of thing.

Parts needed:

Snap-ring plyers

Transmission spring compressor used to get the snap ring out of there (example http://store.boxwrench.net/KD-Tool-2398-Automatic-Transmission-Universal-Clutch-Spring-Compressor-Transmission-Rebuilding-DVD_p_84.html)

OR some people just borrow or buy a cheaper one, or use a couple C-clamps if you are very careful.

Angle feeler gauges

A perfectly flat bar of some sort (to measure tolerances off the transmission front end)

Caliper or depth gauge to measure distances to .0001"

E-Star wrench to separate front diff case from main AT case

A home-made wrench to twist off the front diff bearing seals

Lead pen for checking front diff ring/pinion fitment.

Vaseline

E20 torx socket - $10 shipped, eBay

Various male torx sockets (I don't remember what size(s) you will need once in the trans, but there is one needed for removing a bolt that holds on the front pinion.

This is a 7-bay trans shop in NJ, who get their rebuild kits from Precision International. I called them and talked to a head tech who is looking into getting thinner steels and maybe thinner clutch packs in order to fit more of them in. More clutches = more grip.

Ford DIY AT rebuild youtube series http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D69D572AAF5C7959

There are tons of other trans rebuild videos on youtube, but I have not found any specific to the Jatco 5eat family.

Well my mind is at ease, is there something you guys don't have a writeup on?!

I'll just make the subbie stage 2 and worry about the 5eat when ever it goes, then rebuild.

hmm... gets me thinking... I wonder if i can put my ej22t closed deck shortblock in with out going insane...

Don't try and get crazy, when it comes time, either a ej257 $1645.00, or rebuild your with forged pistons if your looking for 350+whp. Keep it simple.

IMO you'll want the HexMod kit sooner then later.

250whp would be cool. 300whp would be awesome! If I decide I want more, it wont be with this car.

I want to keep the 255, and stock ride height(I will be using every inch of it :D).

I think I found someone for the EJ22t shortblock anyways.

I like the hexmod thing, but I might go the diy route and install a TransGo kit.

It sounds just as good, Plus I get to get my hands dirty :D

Hopefully when the trans bombs the vavle body wont be ruined. I'm hoping i can feel it dying and rebuild before theirs shards of metal and clutchs packs ruining everything in sight.
