sleepysgt
What's up guys new to this forum and new to Subaru. I am in the same boat. Just bought an 05 legacy gt and I'm thinking my Turbo might be going out. Engine sounds good but when I press on the gas I Hear a rattling noise coming from the Turbo. As the rpms go up you can hear it more. Any advice or experience with this issue?
Nuar
I would definitely say thats your turbo. My advice, stop driving the car in this state.
forcedinductiongt
stop drivong it immediately or face the replacement of an entire short block
legacy gt2.5
What if u hear a whine..is that the turbo or no
forcedinductiongt
Depends...if it's affected by rpm, not speed, and sounds like a cat slowly getting run over by a steam roller...then yes, most likely
Nuar
That could be a lot of things. You would have to provide some more info. Does it whine when you're accelerating or decelerating? If under acceleration pay attention if the whine gets louder as your car is picking up power, that could potentialy be a turbo, especially if it instantly changes sound when you get off the throttle. If its steadily getting louder or faster as your speedometer increases then it could be drivetrain related, maybe a bearing. Its a lot of variables. Try to pay attention if its coming from the front, the back... See if you can pinpoint the location. It could also just be your tires. Hope this helps a little. Post up what you find. As the rpms go up you can hear it more. Any advice or experience with this issue? As others said, stop running the engine until you pull the down pipe and check the turbo for shaft play. What if u hear a whine..is that the turbo or no These cars whine, my 5mt as most, is loud in 1st-3rd grears, my turbo, you can just hear it spool with the radio volume low. The first whine under boost is normally a leak in the tmic clamps at the seam of core to end plastic end tanks. If you have a air compressor, pull the hose off the air filter box and plug it with a small paint can, then remove the small hose from the blow off valve and give it a short blast of air, not to much or you'll blow the vacuume lines off, put your thumb over the hose and listen for leaks. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. sleepysgt
So after going to a Subaru specialist it was confirmed that it is definitely the Turbo. The car is parked and I'm doing my homework on a new Turbo. Any suggestions. I eventually wanted to upgrade the Turbo but this issue came at the worst possible time. But oh we'll got to get it fixed. Any suggestions on What Turbo I should get? I understand with bigger turbos comes a bigger list of upgrades but at this time I am very limited on just getting the Turbo. sleepysgt
I also read that the stock up pipes can be a big hazard for a new Turbo, should I change that to?

Six star speed, has a vf52 for $800. google them. The vf52 with a street tune is your best bet for future mod's. Mine is on stock fueling and stock oil feed lines, with banjo filters removed. If I want more HP I can upgrade injectors and fuel pump. To be honest, I don't see me spending that money. The car is a blast to drive everyday. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Max Capacity
I only hear the whine 1-3 gears..but the cat hesitates n jerks like a beginner driving stick. Any ideas The whine is normal in these cars, you'll also hear the Throttle Body whine about 50mph in a 05. My wagon dose it. When do you get the jerkness, just after a shift ? May be start your own thread about that. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. WhiteMonster06
I also read that the stock up pipes can be a big hazard for a new Turbo, should I change that to? Only if you have 05-06 year of gt. they have a cat in them which has the possibility of breaking apart and being sucked into your turbo. I have an 06 so I replaced mine with an invidia castles up pipe. The probability of having it happen however is very small, but the more miles, the bigger risk of it becoming an issue. IMHO replace it anyway, you'll get a slight bump in performance too, my turbo spooled up about 300 rpm sooner than it did with a cat.

Just went through this same situation. I ended up going with the BNR 16g because it is very close to stock but with a better compressor wheel so it's a bit better on top end performance and can handle a little more power without needing to upgrade the fuel system (though I did anyway, got a new fuel pump) other good alternatives are VF52, or just a new VF40/46... Your call. Each have their own pros and cons.
Nuar
Most of my instal was done today. Uppipe is in, old turbo is out (wasnt too bad actually, barely any play in the shaft). New turbo is all prelped to go in. The plumbing lines went on no problem, but i can see where there may have been a problem using the stock lines. I ordered my bnr with all new lines from Brian. The job got held up by some rotted out hoses and a broken turbo inlet hose. Few hoses cracked and the turbo inlet got torn up pretty bad. Will be finished up this week and tuned next weekend. WhiteMonster06
Get it tuned and you won't be disappointed pushing 18.5 lbs with mine tapering to 13 by redline but you wouldn't know it because of how well it holds top end.
Nuar
Nice One of the snags was a torn turbo inlet hose. My buddy tracked one down. Guy showed up with a stock inlet, $40, i bought it. Then realized that the coupler side that slips onto the turbo is torn :/ So today we ordered a perrin inlet from a local tunning shop. Should be in tomorrow, along with all the required replacement hoses at the dealership. Tune will be on Saturday (i friggin hope!)
Nuar
The car is back together and tuned. It feels great! At first it was only pushing 8.5# of boost, the waste gate was too loose and needed to be adjusted. It's pushing a little over 15#s now. Feels strong The tune was a road tune, so now we will have to bring the subie to a dyno and see what she is putting down for power. My car is due to get a dyno run as well so maybe ill get a few friends together for a mini dyno day
WhiteMonster06
Glad to hear. Just make sure you're happy with your setup and tune. People will hate on it because it isn't what they would do or whatever the reason. Just remember, you're the one driving it so they can $&!@ off. As long as you're happy with it that's all that matters
