Instrument Cluster & HVAC Control Lightbulb Replacement Walkthrough.

Recommended Posts

-- PLEASE NOTE --

This is an incomplete write up. Anything in this post could be wrong, so don't go quoting me on this until it's done and proven. Currently, the bulbs are being shipped to me. I will update this thread ASAP.

I recently realized that you could change the bulbs in the cluster (every other car I've owned had soldered LEDs) so I got pretty excited. After hours of searching LGT, I found a thread by one bad bg outlining in a couple videos exactly what you need, but I have trouble following videos and the website he used has been overhauled since. (Here's that thread: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/10-dollar-10-minute-gauge-mod-124039.html )

So here I am, writing an up-to-date walkthrough of exactly what you need to do, start to finish, to replace/upgrade your cluster and HVAC control bulbs.

Step 1: Buy your bulbs

I got my bulbs from superbrightleds for a little over $12 shipped. Not bad for direct fit bulbs right? Pretty sweet. You can order different colors for a cool gradient effect, but I just ordered all red. Anyway, here are the bulbs you need:

Outside Instrument Cluster Bulbs

Size: 168

Qty: 4

Inside Instrument Cluster Bulbs

Size: 74

Qty: 2

Link: https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/boat-miniature-wedge-bulbs/74-led-bulb-1-led-wedge-base/226/1056/

HVAC Control Bulbs

Size: T-1 (3mm)

Qty: 3

Link: https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/led-vehicle-replacement-bulbs/neox-led-bulb-instrument-panel-led/220/989/

Make sure none of the bulbs are "oversized" because they might not fit. None of the links provided are oversized bulbs. You might be able to find colored bulbs at auto parts stores, but I'm not sure.

Step 2: Install Your Bulbs

Before you even think about doing anything electrical, disconnect your battery. Might want to do a quick key fob check to make sure you can shut your alarm off after you reconnect it. Alternatively, you could take a few fuses out, but that's too much work for me.

I haven't actually done this yet since my bulbs are being shipped, but you can see how to install them over in one bad bg's first video in this thread.

HVAC Control Bulbs

Aczwild has a very solid write up on this so I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here. Check it out:

I just did this recently but am having issues with my 2 inside cluster bulbs that are smaller. I'm of the opinion that I need new twist-lok's as those 2 are burned some from the old bulbs, but I can't figure out what the correct size is. Otherwise the dash is very bright aside from those 2 smaller bulbs flickering on and off after a little while running.

ya, i had a room full of fluorescent black lights (and fuzzy posters) for years. my eyes arent that great anyway, hehe. im thinking of doing the green, then having a secondary set for dash, overhead and under dash that come on black light with a second switch for ambiance when i want it. my wagon will be green and black painted, eventually.
