Toallhisdoom
Car threw these codes the other day p0500 p1540. Speedometer does not work. CEL on. Idles low. Other wise seems fine. It is in the negative temps in ny the past week not sure if that could cause the speed sensor to freeze up? Where is the sensor located? I think the code is for speed sensor 2? Any ideas? Headtrauma89
The spped sensors are on the passenger side of the trans. Looks like a black cylinder. Iirc one is right behind the bell housing and the other is near the axle output.

Toallhisdoom
Ok located the sensor... Now, what models/year cars have the same sensor? Few guys on CL that has parts cars so need something that will work. Not paying 100 for a new one.
Toallhisdoom
Found a guy with a 98 forester that he says i can have the sensor from for 35 bucks. He claims he looked it up and its the same. Any clue?
Headtrauma89
i believe they changed in 99. But just be sure get on autozone.com or something, look up the part number for both vehicles and compare

Toallhisdoom
So pulled my front sensor out. When i put power to it and have my volt meter on it it seems to work. What else could cause this to read as bad?
Headtrauma89
Check your rear sensor, if the code is for sensor 2. Less likely possibility is that the paddle wheel inside the trans Is broken. I'd replace the sensors first though
Toallhisdoom
Will check rear sensor tomorrow. Thanks!
GEE-OTTO
Same thing happened to me this morning threw P0500 checked it with a pocket scanner had two codes I cleared the codes by disconnecting the battery. Will check if it comes back. Seems like it could be annoying to fix.
Toallhisdoom
Yea. Did the speedo stop working? I think if the speedo stops its the rear sensor. Front sensor is super easy to fix.
GEE-OTTO
Yea. Did the speedo stop working? I think if the speedo stops its the rear sensor. Front sensor is super easy to fix. Thats the thing speedo is fine just rough low idle and still throws P0500. I cleared it twice once with the scanner the second time via battery disconnect. Drives fine as well. I guess that easy to fix sensor costs an ass load ?
Toallhisdoom
Around 110. Look on cl for someone parting one out. Take the front sensor out. Attach drill to the shaft. Attach volt meter to plug terminals and spin drill. If voltage goes up its good.
