(Idea) Fiberglass over fenders

Hey guys, I'm really considering designing and producing my own type of over fender type flare with a strong influence from the rocket bunny type of styling on the new BRZ stuff. My car is an 05 so they will be designed around this body type. I have the will and idea, but what I'm looking for is some help on how to work with fiberglass and where to source all of it. I will also take any ideas and positive input into consideration when developing the final lines. Please help me out and let me know what you think.

i understand the process of making a positive mould on the car then making a negative from that and using that vegetive to make the final product. my only thing is i have never worked with fiberglass, bondo, expanding foam... or any of the materials. i am extremely skilled with customizing and modifying parts, just not fiberglass. i need to know what kind of materials i am going to need and how much of them will be enough to cover it all.

Get some fiberglass mat, resin, hardener, brushes and some gloves and just mess with it.

You can't start with over fenders, well, you can but you will give up.

Don't worry about mould making, expanding foam or ANYTHING yet.

I would start by doing this; Get something simply shaped and tape it up with painters tape, spray some Pam cooking spray on it (This will help with mold release). Mix your resin & hardener. Dip your brush into the cup, remember FG eats through things so you will go through cups/gloves/brushes relatively quickly.

Get a layer of your mixed resin on the piece you want to copy. You should have cut up your FG mat before you started. Start laying your mat on the piece and dab the mat with your brush. Once it starts to stick, you can get it a bit more wet. Just keep doing this until you have no un-fiberglassed areas. Try to avoid air bubbles and stretching out your mat too much. (Air bubbles won't kill you but its going to be a PITA when you go to do your finish work)

Let it settle for a few min (You will have to learn this with experience as to what the proper time is) and add another layer. (If it is to thin, as you go to pull it off it will break in half)

Once you get proper coverage on the piece, let it dry. Once you think its dry, let it dry some more. (Once again, you have to do this a few times to learn what is right and what is not) It will be kind of sticky for a while, I like to pull my copy off when its no longer sticky.

Break your new piece off and clean it up (dremel etc) / add more layers or whatever.

Sorry for the horrible explanation but this is the most basic way to learn. Once you get the jist of how the glass works and get your style of laying it down just right you can start tackling real projects.

If this is something more people are interested in I will do a write-up for you guys. One that is somewhat readable

Wow thank you for all the insight. It's is extremely helpful. And that's exactly the info I was looking for. It's gives me more of a real idea of what I'm getting into. I will take your advise and work on practice stuff before I try the real thing. This helps immensely. Thank you!

If I can find someone local to let me mold off of I will do them for you. In short, my buddy bought a set of universal 240sx flares off eBay awhile back for his 99 RS and them things fit on damn near everything. I tried them on my wife's gr hatch, my buddies 2001 forester and they fit well. Who knows if they fit legacy wagon, and they aren't really cheap enough to experiment but maybe someone has done it. Google it up and see what you can find
