rs6er
I am replacing my OEM Bilsteins with HD's. Mechanic says it is recommended to replace the top mounts along with the struts, but I haven't heard of anyone doing this unless they were switching to Spec B top mounts, which I have. Is this correct?
Moderators BarManBean Posted November 26, 2013 Moderators Share Posted November 26, 2013 Depending on mileage, yes it's sometimes recommended, but only fro the fronts. The fronts have a bearing in them that can wear over time. "Bullet-proof" your OEM TMIC! <<Buy your kit here>> Not currently in stock
Dujo
If they're bent. One of my fronts was no longer flat. Swapped it for new.
rs6er
So, I'm okay with the rears?

iNVAR
Rears are usually fine, but they're made of rubber I believe and rubber does age as you know. Replace the fronts. 80K on mine and the fronts were both toast when I did my struts. The bearings were very crunchy.
rs6er
Mine have 63,000 miles. I didn't replace them. They were fine.
iNVAR
Interesting. The bearings spun completely freely and quietly?
rs6er
Rears only.
iNVAR
The rears don't have bearings.... edit: Do you mean you kept the rears and replaced the fronts?
AZP Installs
We usually suggest replacing the fronts if they show any signs of wear due to the bearings, rears should be good until you get to your second or 3rd set of shocks/struts. -mike

I kept the rear top hats and replaced the rear OEM Bilsteins with Bilstein HDs. I didn't do anything in the front.
