Junk Yard Tranny swap for 99 Legacy, 5mt, 2.2l

Recommended Posts

I have a 1999 Legacy wagon (BK vin number) with a 5 speed manual, 2.2l.

somehow the center differential got toasted and I think it will be

cheaper to drop in a new (used) tranny. From what I've read I can use

most any 5mt as long as the final drive is the same.

I have a TY754VAAAA, FINAL DRIVE IS A 3.900.

Will all of these tranny's bolt up to my 2.2L (phaze two, if that matters)?

I'd also be interested in advice on parts to replace while the tranny is out. A clutch kit of course, but any seals, or ...?

All transmissions in the list below have these four specs.

TR = 1.000

FD = 3.900

Center Dif = Viscous (4kgf)

Rear = Open

nope,

they all say that because the trans ID# printed on the bell housing at the starter changes every year.

you can use any manual trans 99 - 04 with the 3.9 final drive ratio,

from a leagcy L, brighton or low end impreza.

you CAN NOT use a manual trans from an outback, GT or high end impreza (WRX).

they have a 4.11 final drive ratio.

i thought i answered this some where else.

Just to split hairs, you can bolt up an Outback or GT trans if you swap the rear diff as well. . . but really, no reason to.

3.90 trannies are easy to come by and most folks want higher ratios (lower #'s numerically) for better mileage.

I pay no attention to the alphabet soup TY label.

You can use an earlier trans too if you don't mind losing the 4 extra bellhousing bolts that they mysteriously gained in 99, but:

If you go with an older unit from something like an Impreza, be aware that they ran cable drive speedos in later years than the Legacy (I don't know what year they cut off), so you may have to swap the cable drive to a speed sensor. That has not been a problem for me in the past but my experience is limited to just a couple of swaps where that was an issue.

Don't go past 04 for the trans. . . they switched to male axles/female trans in 05 on the legacy platform (04 in Forester but it's the wrong ratio so not a candidate) so no way you'll get it to work.

H6 is 4.11, they're 4EAT only. (booo)

No H6 stateside until 2001, can't vouch for overseas models. . . there are two distinct and non-interchangeable H6 trannies used 01-04: VDC and non VDC. Both use the same final drive, but that's pretty much where the similarities end.

Very little is interchangeable between a VDC car and a non VDC car in terms of transmission, ABS components, and trans/ABS electronics.

Don't know about how things progressed in the VDC trannies but I'm fairly certain 03 or 04 non-VDC H6 trannies are a little different in terms of electronics. I remember reading about someone over on subaruoutback.org having to invert the signal to his transfer clutch solenoid when running a trans of a different year.

I'm so hijacking this thread...

LocMed, is the AWD the symmetrical one? As in its not the same as on the BD I have? Also, does it have the outback H4 VLSD with the 4.44

Ratio that is discussed much on here? I know

Westcoast had that put on his white BD before it went to heaven..
